"Homework" during the school holidays

I know homework can be a big issue for some children, but my eldest (7) loves the routine of doing hers each day and her sister (4 and starting reception class in September) has been doing "homework" recently (just some number and alphabet flashcards and a pen control book!).

My AIBU is whether I should let them continue doing this during the school holidays to try and keep some routine for when they go back to school?

We are going to be doing the reading challenge at the library anyway, but could use sumdog for my eldest to do some maths in a fun way and her sister could still do her flashcards and pen control but is this a bit OTT???

I know I am probably about to be told to just let them have the holidays to play but hopefully maybe someone out there has children who are the same :)

I think it's great to keep to routine (unless going away on holiday) and it's best for the child so they don’t forget stuff/ take a while to get back to where they were. I often find that having a break like 6 weeks makes it difficult to get back to where I was so it doesn't have to be proper homework just revision or preparation for next year. Could you ask the teacher about what they will be learning next year for a head start?

I generally get/got mine to do something over the summer, but more to keep skills active / play catch-up than because of routine.
So usually

  • reading challenge
  • daily diary
  • some maths
Note that if they enjoy doing it then it's not work. Smile
