To think that I should be told that I've not been offered a job I applied for, and not find out over social media

I had a job interview yesterday. I was told they had others to interview but I would hear by the end of the week.

I've just seen on social media that one of my friends has been tagged in a post this morning, one of her colleagues has been offered a new job and she's thanking everyone she works with and announcing she's leaving.

Yes, it's the job I applied for. I've heard nothing from the company. I've got no missed calls or emails.

AIBU to expect that the company would let me know that I've not been successful personally? Sad

You'd expect so but in my experience a lot of companies only contact successful applicants. It's so demoralising, and rude

ToastyFingers · 17/07/2018 20:33

It would be lovely if they did, but in my experience that's not often the case.

Sorry you didn't get the job Flowers

kimber83 · 17/07/2018 20:35

unfortunately they may have been waiting on her acceptance before letting other (backup) candidates know? that's the norm in my office

UpstartCrow · 17/07/2018 20:35

That's not a great way way to find out, but I've never been contacted and told I didn't get the job. I wouldnt really expect that unless it was in house with only a couple of applicants.

Sometimes companies want to keep people “warm”. So if they liked her best but would have you as second choice then thy don’t want to reject you until she has actually accepted the role. Not nice but happens a lot IME.

theycallmebabydriver · 17/07/2018 20:36

That is crappy, poor you.

In my experience companies hedge their bets a bit in that they don't tell candidates they've been unsuccessful until the person they've offered the job to signs on the dotted line and that can take a few days to get the paperwork in order. Shit for you but I can see how it would happen.

It's not a big ask to let all interviewees know whether they've been successful or not. That won't usually be more than half a dozen at most. I can understand not contacting people who weren't shortlisted, although with a decent automated system there's no reason not to. Interviews are different, though.

Sorry, OP. Onwards and upwards!
