To be cross about a light bulb?

God this is going to sound really petty.
We live in apartments. The conversion is rubbish. The lights in the hall I discovered during a power trip out all run on my electricity. All the flats are on pre payment meter which is more expensive anyway.

Tbh in the past this wasn't an issue much as old neighbour was respectful and immediately switched off. New neighbours frequently leave it on for hours and all weekend if we are away and don't switch it off at night.

Aibu to be miffed about paying electricity to service someone else use?

I'd shut that fuse off if it were me.

I feel your pain op. We are one of only two flats that are owned in a block of ten. Most neighbours are lovely and respectfull of communal areas but the odd few just don't give a shit cos they aren't paying for it. Any damage just ends up on our service charge as they have no long term interest in keeping things nice and the housing people make no attempt to chase up their tenants to charge them.
It is just a light bulb but it's very wasteful and annoying

Lightbulbdrain · 17/07/2018 10:39

I don't want to work out the cost of electricity to power the hall lights for the seven years I have been here either tbh as it will annoy me greatly.

I especially despise paying for the electricity used by the new neighbours because he is awful!

No way should you be paying! Who manages the communal areas, can you refer it to the managing agent or freeholder? You should absolutely ask for compensation from them as well for the last seven years.

Sittingonaspindryer · 17/07/2018 10:43

What's the annual cost of running a lightbulb?
Put an LED in it, then even if it is on 24/7, it will only be about £25/year. Do they know it is on your meter? Point out to them and ask them to be more considerate.

You can get switches that when pushed only stay on for a set time (you can set between 5 seconds and 5 minutes) to be honest they probably won't be cost effective, but might make you feel better taking back a bit of control!

That said, really Ferntwist above is right - you should be looking at building management to sort it properly.

gamerchick · 17/07/2018 11:03

Just turn off that switch in your meter so the lights can't be turned on.

Lightbulbdrain · 17/07/2018 11:09

I've looked in my fuse box and only have a switch that says lights not individual switches that I can see.

Then flick that one, use lamps. I would be stubborn enough to do that. Cheeky gits Grin
