Just that really? I'm a hairdresser and I used to love my job but now I've been doing it for 10 years I'm beginning to hate it. I wish I could retrain/switch careers but I just have no idea where to start. AIBU? Is this just how everyone feels when they get older?

Nope, hate it. I started 11 years ago on a 3 month contract to work on a specific project and I'm still here. It's just me and my boss who drives me nuts most days. I used to work from home, but the company changed focus completely, so now I have to work out of home. I hate the environment, I hate the work I do. BUT, my boss is very flexible. I officially work 9.00-2.00 but usually dont get to work til about 9.15-9.30 and if the work I need to do is finished, I can leave from about 12.00 onwards. And if I need time off at short notice, I can do that with no issues. The flexibility I have makes staying worth it I guess. I certainly wouldn't get that elsewhere, so I put up with everything else.

Meh. I'm currently working as a barista because that was the only job I could get when I was back in the UK after a year of living/working abroad. I have a degree but have been stuck in low paid/low skill jobs since I graduated a few years ago. Despite putting all my effort into job applications for better-paid jobs with actual career prospects I keep getting rejected - I never even reach the interview stage. To make things worse my hours have been cut now as we're not getting enough customers in. Desperately hunting for a new job but given my track record I won't get my hopes up Sad

I don’t love my job (hospitality management for 15+ years), but I don’t hate it either. Currently retraining as a Physio, 1 year in. Really enjoying it so far and best decision I ever made!

hownowpowpow · 19/07/2018 11:14

Not anymore. Getting to the point where I know I have to leave but am wondering what I want to do now. I'm public sector (not UK) and we are almost brainwashed into thinking it would be crazy to leave your permanent and pensionable job. I just can't take it anymore. I'm really unhappy.

No. I hate it. Night shift in a supermarket. It has made me mentally unwell.
I'm hoping to move to days. 🙁

NewtScamandersNaughtyNiffler · 19/07/2018 11:54

I'm a carer in a care home. I love a couple of aspects of the job but hate far more. As soon as I can find something else I'm out of here. My physical and mental health are being pushed to the limit.

IGiorni · 19/07/2018 11:57

I have a love-hate relationship with mine. It’s stressful, tiring and the pay is crap. It’s so rewarding though and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

mmmgoats · 19/07/2018 11:57

I love my job. I work from home and work for myself, love the variety and flexibility but also really appreciate that I'm very lucky things have worked out like this.

That's great to hear- and how I feel too!

My work this morning has involved-

  1. picking herbs in the garden.
  2. Walking through the forest taking photographs.
  3. Packing stuff to post.
  4. Making an essential oil blend.

I get paid to play!

TurquoiseWeekend · 19/07/2018 12:14

I hate it. It's not interesting. It's the same rubbish every day and I don't work with anyone remotely friendly. I was looking for something else but then found out I'm pregnant so I'm going to have to stick it out for a bit so I don't miss out on maternity leave.

catlady34 · 19/07/2018 12:14

speakout what do you do?

mmmgoats · 19/07/2018 12:17

@speakout that sounds lovely!
So far today I've had coffee (obviously) done a bit of leisurely proofreading in the sun, written a quick post, taken some pictures and about to take myself off for a walk in the park where I will possibly take some more pictures.
This afternoon I have a bit of social media work to do for a client, then will be working on a couple of my own things. :)

psychomath · 19/07/2018 12:17

DieSchottin, what was your degree in? Most of my friends and I were in a similar position after graduating but have slowly managed to find jobs with better prospects after a year or three. Several of us started out in our actual career paths working in schools or social work/care-type jobs with young people - there's a lot of demand there for people with all academic backgrounds, if that's something you'd be interested in Smile

DieSchottin93 · 19/07/2018 22:12

@psychomath my degree is in languages. It's been three years since I graduated now so I really need to find a "proper" job ASAP, I feel at my age I should be settling into a career by now Sad
