Just got my DD report today, and the attendance is listed as 91% which in my calculations is wrong considering she’s been at school everyday except the 2 half days she got sent home for being ill. The only other days she had off were because the school was closed, one for a snow day and another one because a suspected ww2 bomb was found in the vicinity. Surely they shouldn’t include those days as part of her absences ? Can anyone shed any light to this?

OP, does it also give the numbers for total attendance and each type of absence so you can see how the 91% has been calculated? I agree that school closure should not count.

pudcat · 16/07/2018 19:45

Lates often count as absences

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 16/07/2018 19:46

They should be able to give you a detailed report with every session marked by a letter code. It's possible there are errors. www.gov.uk/government/publications/school-attendance page 8 onwards details the approved code use.

chipsandgin · 16/07/2018 19:50

We’ve had this every year at three different schools for over 10 years - I don’t get it. One year DS1 hadn’t had a single day off - literally 100% attendance & he still got 96%. I’ve stopped thinking about it any more - the school office don’t like being queried on it - I know the reality of it so just let it go. Baffling though, I agree!

Sophisticatedsarcasm · 16/07/2018 19:52

We’ve never been late, I hate being late... we literally live 7 minutes walk away so no reason to be.
There was 2 snow days... but she’s literally had 2 half days off from our side so surely it should be about 96/97%

Or this is totally not right

pudcat · 16/07/2018 19:53

91% means she has has 17 whole days off. That is a lot. They have probably made a mistake and meant 99% for the 2 half days

OuchLegoHurts · 16/07/2018 19:53

Does it matter? Not being sarcastic but I'm in Ireland where it doesn't make any difference how many days a student misses as long as it's under 20

ReservoirDogs · 16/07/2018 19:55

Has she been in any sports fixtures as at our school if they aren't at registration but are at a sports fixture it affects the attendance % but the school knows this

VickyEadie · 16/07/2018 19:55

School ought to be interested if they've got it wrong - for one thing, it affects their overall results and if they've got one wrong, chances are they've got others wrong, too.

Looks like human error in data collection to me.

Sophisticatedsarcasm · 16/07/2018 19:56

It does matter because they bang on and on about attendance over here, and she was near on perfect which for a 5 year old is very good considering how many illnesses go round at that age. No sports fixtures 🤔

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 16/07/2018 19:58

Is she in reception? Did she have a staggered start?
There are some non compulsory not of school age codes on there I think.

Sophisticatedsarcasm · 16/07/2018 19:58

I’m gonna write it on the comments page I have to fill in.

OP posts:
Sophisticatedsarcasm · 16/07/2018 19:59

Yeah she’s in reception, didn’t have a staggered start as she is oldest in her class so started first. It’s just really strange.

butteriesplease · 16/07/2018 20:00

She is 5. Get over it. If you know she's had better attendance then so be it. Doesn't bloody matter really does it?

Camper82 · 16/07/2018 20:02

It says 367 possible attendances, with 3 absences. That equates to 99.182% As the %ge shown is 91.82

Camper82 · 16/07/2018 20:03

Sorry pressed post too soon.

I think it shows there’s been an error, either mathematical or typo.

335 attendances, plus 3 absences does not add up to 367 possibles.

AnastasiaVonBeaverhausen · 16/07/2018 20:03

I think they've made a mistake with the numbers and dropped a 9

Janek · 16/07/2018 20:05

I think they've worked it out till the end of the year ie 367 sessions in total, you've attended 335 and had 3 absences, but your 'percentages' don't add up to 100% so there is clrealy something wrong with the figures!

BrazzleDazzleDay · 16/07/2018 20:05

Our school had 10 snow days, they were marked as absences. Bit shit really.

TeenTimesTwo · 16/07/2018 20:07

At the bottom of the photo, they clearly have this week and I think also next as educational weeks (marked with a - ). They have included school up until the end of term as possible attendances. So if you break up Friday next week (though that is quite late) that is another 19 possible attendances.

Have they got end of term in the correct place?
Look at every code that isn't / or \ and go from there.

9amTrain · 16/07/2018 20:07

Who shat on @butteriesplease cornflakes?

Plantlover · 16/07/2018 20:08

If a child has 3.5 days of school left and there attendance is currently 97.2 how many days does that mean the child missed?

Sorry to barge on the thread but it's clear people on it have great knowledge about attendance!

Corneliusmurphy · 16/07/2018 20:08

If you look the start of term is all xx, presumably she had a staggered start and couldn't go any earlier but it still counts as days out of her school year.

TeenTimesTwo · 16/07/2018 20:10

Yes OP you need to understand it.
If your DC has illnesses etc next year and gets poor attendance, you don't want someone wheeling out incorrect stuff from this year to show a history of poor attendance.
