To not buy my son scratchcards?

Justtheonequestion · 16/07/2018 18:40

My son is 13 and got birthday money. Yesterday at a wedding reception they had scratchcards and he kept winning 2/1 pounds.
Today he wants me to get him 10 pounds worth of scratchcards from the shop. I said no. Aibu?

Of course you're not being unreasonable. Why would you encourage addictive gambling behaviour in a child? You need to teach him that the house always wins, in the end.

9amTrain · 16/07/2018 19:06

No, yanbu I wouldn't be buying scratchcards for a 13 year old.

I did a course once where a pop quiz prizes were scratch cards. Over the years they had bought thousands.
Biggest payout they knew of was £75

He is that kind of addictive boy-and his dad loved a gamble. It worries me x

YANBU. There was a very interesting YouTube video that i’m Sure you could find. A guy had been given something like 150 scratchcards from the same roll and he scratches each and every one. He barely made his money back, I think his profit was about £20 😱 It just went to show how crappy the odds are and it doesn’t necessarily make a difference how many you buy from the same roll. Show him that and he may change his mind.

blackbirdbluebottle · 17/07/2018 14:45

YANBU if you start now then the problem only gets worse. If he ever does something really bad then you could get him a scratch card to give later on and he wins a lot of money... then watch the reaction when you tell him it's fake 😂

Don’t buy him scratch cards again need to stop this now before he becomes an adult and gambles all of his money away

NewGrandad · 17/07/2018 14:48

As the legal age to buy scratchcards is 16 and he's 13 then YANBU.

If he wanted you to buy him 20 Benson & Hedges would you?

BubblesInTheTub · 17/07/2018 14:49

YANBU. It's his money, he can buy whatever he likes with it. Unfortunately it's illegal for him to buy scratchcards so he'll have to do without until he's old enough to buy them for himself.

ThisIsntMeHonestGuv · 17/07/2018 15:48

He 'kept winning' at the wedding? How many scratchcards did they provide? Was he claiming everyone else's cards too?

PitterPatterOfBigFeet · 17/07/2018 16:02

YANBU there's a reason for the age limit on scratch cards. There's no good reason to buy them for him.

Buxtonstill · 17/07/2018 16:09

I read in a newspaper that someone working in the local post office had gone to court for stealing scratchcards, ringing customers goods in under the scratchcard button and then stealing the same amount in scratchcards. They went through the cctv, and records of her being on the till and worked out she had stolen around £8000 in cards. over the year she was doing this she won just over £300 in total........

Typhers · 17/07/2018 16:28

I’d say no as well, gambling is a habit best avoided 😄

JennyBlueWren · 17/07/2018 16:33

@mismatchedstripysocks to make a£20 profit is actually very impressive as they are understandably set to lose overall!
