Dd's back baby tooth in front of her permanent adult molar fell out last night and I noticed that there is a small hole in the enamel on her permanent tooth where the other tooth was touching (the area you can't see or brush) and I'm so upset. She's brushes twice a day and flosses. She's only 9 and honestly I'm absolutely gutted as her teeth seemed perfect. Dh thinks I'm being ridiculous but I feel so guilty. Sad

I understand but YAB a teensy bit U
It's really not as huge disaster.
My eldest is 8, brushes twice daily, barely has any sugar because I'm a horrible mum, we do everything right and she has a filling.
My dentist said to me that it's a much to do with her genetics as anything else.
Therefore husband is completely to blame because his teeth are riddled with fillings where as I am ancient and have none.
Honestly, it's very unlikely it's down to you.

Thanks Anastasia, I think I'm just so gutted as it's an adult tooth wouldn't have been so upset it if was a baby tooth. I suppose it's good that the tooth fell out and we caught it early as it's right on the gym line in between the teeth we'd never have seen it.

My youngest child’s enamel never formed properly on his teeth so he has ongoing dental issues.

The dentist said it would have been something that happened while he was in the womb.. maybe I had a virus or something, or medication I may have taken. All quite vague but basically something outside of our control..

It is gutting but we deal with as best we can (fissure sealing and crowns when he is older).

Gum line that should say.

Ah I've heard of that NotAsGreen. I'm.going to call dentist in the morning, dreading it in case it's worse than it looks. Feel like such a shitty mum right now.

Ah I didn't realise it was adult tooth! It seems very early for decay to have set in to the extent that it's caused a cavity? (My dd's in her baby tooth). It actually sounds more like a natural flaw in the tooth - especially given the location. I have one in the side of one of my back molars right at the bottom. It's always been there and has never required filling or anything as it's more like a sealed pit than a cavity - if that makes sense? But obviously ask the dentist.

NotBeforeMyCoffee · 15/07/2018 22:32

Yeah it's most definitely a cavity I have no idea how it happened as the baby tooth that fell out and would have been touching that area is perfect it's bizarre. It's like a tiny little hole but it's on a flat bit of enamel. It's hard to explain but hopefully dentist can fix it with minimal tooth loss. Sad

Some people have crappy teeth. I do. They're straight and white and look very nice, but they're weak and riddled with issues. No amount of brushing our flossing stops the cavities.

You could try a mouth rinse with flouride.

AndIWouldWalk500Yards · 15/07/2018 22:38

Don't feel shitty.

It is a true but not often reported fact that chicken pox in a child can cause huge damage to teeth in the gums that are waiting to erupt.

I had chicken pox aged about 4 weeks old. Every single one of my baby teeth had a brown line across them when they came through and from those brown lines my teeth decayed. Aged about 4 I had most of them removed. It was fucking horrible and I've never forgotten it.

This makes me so cross. It is a known side effect of CP but we hear so little about it. Instead it must always be down to sugar or poor dental hygiene. I didn't get any sugar or have any teeth to brush. They came through damaged.

SmileSweetly · 15/07/2018 22:39

You couldn't have done more than regular dentist visits, brushing and flossing. I can completely understand your guilt even though it completely unfounded, but really, give yourself a break.

MarthaArthur · 15/07/2018 22:41

Dont feel shitty op. It was an impossible to reach area. And dentists work wonders. I used to date someone who had the most perfect teeth until he told me all his front teeth had fillings in! I never would have known.

NotBeforeMyCoffee · 15/07/2018 23:07

Thanks everyone, I've just had a good cry about it (dh officially thinks I've lost the plot) I'm also due on so feeling a bit emotional Grin will just have to go to dentist and deal with it.
