To ask how to move to New York

minniecats · 15/07/2018 19:01

To ask you all how on earth I can up my family and our lives and move to New York?!
This is a half joking question, but in all seriousness has anyone done it?
We've had a few stays there and I just think even if not forever, it would be a great adventure for us all.
Has anyone ever done similar before?
We've got 2 under 5's!

Can you do that? What about visas and jobs?

DuchyDuke · 15/07/2018 19:05

Study a masters here and apply for a highly skilled visa from the ‘masters lottery’

SwedishEdith · 15/07/2018 19:06

Legally, you mean? Be very rich/have a niche talent/get a job.

ConfessionsOfTeenageDramaQueen · 15/07/2018 19:12

If you or your spouse run a business look into an E1 trade visa.

Sorry to be a downer but NY is crap though. Like London (crowded, smelly, dirty) but worse.

And I am a Londoner and America-lover!

Actually maybe this will put you off:

I knew that would be the rat baby Tweet before clicking the link. That seriously grossed me out when I saw it yesterday!

ConfessionsOfTeenageDramaQueen · 15/07/2018 19:17

@Absofruitly 😂😂😂

ReevaDiva · 15/07/2018 19:25

Have a shitload of money to spare every month for health insurance.

What kind of assets/skills do you have?

If you’re not exceedingly wealthy or in a job that’s exceedingly well paid or where you could get some kind of NY stint for a year or two with housing included, I think you’re unlikely to get what you want out of it. Most people who go to NY visit Manahattan or maybe Brooklyn. But it’s ridiculously expensive to get a place to live there (especially one big enough for children). You’ll be most likely to be living out in New Jersey or somewhere with a long commute. It would be like wanting to come to London because you’ve visited the centre and done the tourist stuff but ending up moving to Luton and commuting in.

There are some jobs that are easier to get in with - obviously some highly specialist jobs where there aren’t many candidates, but also nursing and (I think) police. You could also go the student route - which I think would be a fantastic experience if you can afford it. If you have lots of money I believe you can get a visa on the basis of starting a business too, but I think you need to provide a minimum invest of at least $1m.

RedPanda2 · 15/07/2018 20:03

Aren't most schools private aswell?

Fintress · 15/07/2018 20:11

I've known three people that went to work New York but they were all seconded by the companies they work for. Two of them have banker husbands. Neither of the wives were allowed to work due to visa rules.

RunMummyRun68 · 15/07/2018 20:33

Where's op??

KimchiLaLa · 15/07/2018 22:57

Your best bet is to get your company to "sponsor" you through your visa, if it is a multinational. I worked for one and work for another now and know several people who have done it this way.

bridgetreilly · 15/07/2018 23:03

I lived in Philadelphia for two years on a J1 visa, which is for graduate students and also allowed me to work. I think spouses can also work if that's the visa you can get. But you have to get onto a PhD programme and show that you have all the money for your studies and maintenance for your whole course up front, so...

keyboardkate · 15/07/2018 23:16

Not to put a sock in it, but faraway hills are green.

New York would not be top of my list for an American adventure. The pollution and extremes of heat/cold are something else. Add in the cost of accommodation and health care Yikes.

Anyway I don't know how you can do it without a visa for a favoured employment, or be sponsored by your employer or on a J1.

Someone else will confirm.

Why is NY so precious for you, just asking!
