To expect holiday cottage to be cleaned during our stay?

We’re renting a holiday house for 3 weeks this summer. The company we’re renting through has said sheets will be changed once a week but otherwise they don’t arrange any cleaning.
AIBU to expect the house to be cleaned once a week and clean towels to be provided? Presumably they would do this if there were 3 separate week-long lets so why not for a longer let? We’re not paying any less for 3 weeks in a row than we would for 3 separate weekly lets.

OP, try National Trust holiday cottages. They change bedding etc after a week and do a clean too. It’s included in the price but they do tend to be ££.

Notso, I think I have only ever stayed somewhere once that didn't have a hoover. Usually places have a hoover, mop and bucket and various cleaning products.

Me and DH keep anywhere clean and pretty tidy as we go along. The day before we leave we will give it a pretty good clean and then the morning we leave we will strip the bed, clean bathroom, kitchen etc. It doesn't take long as we have not let it get dirty.

We would never just walk away and leave it. Of course it is going to be cleaned but we don't expect people to clean up after us. We have actually received emails from holiday accommodation owners thanking us for leaving their property so clean.

You sound very nice mydog !

I totally believe people have emailed you after, as I think you are the exception, not the rule!

All I would love is empty bins, clean toilets, or at least not the ones I sometimes get left which I have been known to be sick in as I clean them! Stripping the bed would be great. No more than this though!

No, I would expect bed linen and towels changed weekly, but no cleaning while we were staying. Too risky re insurance, and I wouldn't want people coming into what is our home for two weeks. We've stayed in SC properties for over two decades, for a fortnight in summer, and never had nor expected interim cleaning. The clue's in the name. And don't get me started on people who gripe about not being provided with enough bog roll for eight people for two weeks. Hmm Stay in a hotel or b and b if you want that kind of service.

I can't believe you would clean a self-catering place at the end of your stay (other than leaving it basically tidy etc) - you have already paid for a cleaner in the weekly rate!

Imchlibob · 15/07/2018 23:26

I don't think you could expect this. Obviously you aren't going to be clearing out all your stuff each Saturday and cleaning an empty house containing no personal effects is way easier than cleaning a house where someone lives.

Interesting mydogisthebest I've stayed in one place with a really cool built in vacuum system you plugged into the skirting boards, one with an elderly carpet sweeper and one with a broken Henry that left more bits than he disposed of.
The rest have just had dustpan and brushes and often a mop but not always.

We self cater, both abroad and I need U.K. for 2 weeks at a time, usually via Owners Direct rather than holiday companies. Have never been offered mid-stay cleaning or even clean bedding or towels.

mydogisthebest · 16/07/2018 00:27

It wouldn't cross my mind not to clean a self catering place before I left. My parents always did, my siblings do and my DH thinks you should too.

I could not leave knowing the bathroom and kitchen were not clean and we had not hoovered all round. I strip the beds to help the cleaners out. I obviously wouldn't dust but I would always do the basics.

Also have been a chambermaid and also having cleaned holiday lets here and in France I know how some people (far too many) leave places. If I can make it a bit easier for the cleaner why not? They only get a certain amount of time to clean and so often the people leaving are late going and the people arriving are early which makes it even more difficult.

Some of the places I cleaned people had left dirty cups, plates etc literally all round the house, pages of newspapers and magazines strewn all over the floor, tissues all over the floor, crumbs on the carpets, on the sofas etc, filthy cooker and hob, spilt liquids on carpets, sofas etc. All that takes quite a while to sort out and I still had to strip beds, remake them, dust, hoover, clean bathrooms and kitchen, tidy etc

I've not stayed in a holiday home for three weeks before but our fortnight long stays have not involved a mid-holiday/end-of-week clean. I think it's quite normal to be left to keep the place clean for the duration of the holiday. However what you're staying makes sense- they should perhaps either provide cleaning or deduct the cost of cleaning that they would otherwise have had to pay for
