To think this is a tiny bit rude?

Just gone in neighbour's van to a local Quarry as he offered to show me where it is - it's a popular swimming spot and I didn't know how to get there. On our way back and he's pulled off onto a small road which it turns out leads to his friends house. He says "I'll just nip in and say hi" - then disappears off inside! He's been gone for 20 minutes now- isn't this cheeky? I don't know this friend! I thought we were going home!

At least the view is nice...

We practise rescues in quarries and similar (the exercises are led by people who've been through with an underwater camera and know where the hazards are, the shifts in depth, the unexpected ledges, the cross-currents, the lumps of concrete, unseen rusty rebar etc.).

I hate watching young people dive bomb even into canals from bridges that cross them - they can be near corners and not see oncoming narrow boats or paddlers in kayaks/canoes/stand-up paddle boards etc. There are too many shop trollies and now domestic rubbish in canals to be sure you can do anything with a full safety survey. (I feel ancient writing this but we've had local deaths from people jumping into canals etc. to cool off on the way home from the pub. They get tangle in rubbish, even reeds and can't get their footing - and it's surprising how tangle you can get in carrier bags)

waves back to brizzledrizzle - should we have a paddle salute?

without a full safety survey - curse this heat.

If it sounds OTT, local outdoor centres need to re-run safety surveys when taking people out of the water all of the time because in this heat, water levels can change dramatically and alter the safety of water.

The Dangers

Anyone using open water or near it needs to be aware of hazards and other risk factors including:
Injury if jumping or diving into water which is shallower than it appears
Deeper water than expected, which can increase the risk of drowning if you get into difficulty
Cold temperatures, particularly in deeper water, which can make swimming difficult and make it harder to get out
Open water can be very cold even on a hot summer's day, leading to cramp and breathing difficulties
River banks can be unstable and liable to collapse if you get too close to the edge
If you are in the water the loose and slippery sides of quarries and banks can make if difficult to climb out
There may be hidden obstacles or objects under the surface which could trap a person or cause injury
Strong currents can rapidly sweep people away and they may be present even when the surface looks calm
It is often difficult for the emergency services to access open water sites such as quarries and riverbanks off the beaten track.

Please don’t swim in quarries! My husband has just had to ring the police to inform them he’s had a report of children swimming in a disused Quarry owned by the company he works for and is on his way there now to try and get them out of the ponds. So so dangerous.

YANBU.

It doesn't matter that he did you a favour, it's fucking rude to leave someone sat waiting for you for anything more than running in and out to drop something off.

VladmirsPoutine · 15/07/2018 13:19

Of course that was rude. Favour or not it is weird. MN is really a parallel universe sometimes; I wouldn't be surprised if someone came on to tell you that to thank him you should take him and his family to a Michelin starred restaurant or offer him one of your kidneys should he ever need one.

Coyoacan · 15/07/2018 15:23

In my experience that is quite normal with people who use cars a lot, but I HATE being left sitting in a car.

wellBeehivedWoman · 15/07/2018 15:31

That's very weird. He should have invited you in at least. PP's saying he's doing you a favour are weird. Doing someone a favour doesn't give you licence to be rude and thoughtless to them!

Be very very careful swimming in quarries - they are incredibly dangerous!
