to ask you for suggestions for interesting, not too expensive, Easter holidays abroad?

I'm driving myself nuts trying to decide on where to go. Don't want a-holiday-of-a-lifetime scenario (mainly because of cost) but want somewhere that

Isn't unbearably hot
has great beaches,
some activity/widelife/and
good food!

We have a 7 year old DS who likes a bit of everything.

Before he came along, I travelled often - last few times to SE Asia and India - and I miss it. We've tended to do Europe based holidays and whilst we are lucky to be able to afford those, I'm craving something new.

Recommendations please!

Center parcs in Amsterdam

Very hard to make suggestions without knowing budget! Flights probably biggest cost if you want beyond Europe? We stayed in lovely airbnbs in St Lucia, outside more touristy parts. Music, scuba, rainforest walks, awesome beaches, but expensive flights. Fine once there, as long as you avoid resorts and fancy hotels!

Cyberworrier · 15/07/2018 10:33

Have you been to Orkney or other more remote uK parts? So different to mainland and lots of beaches and culture!

PukkaLovetea · 15/07/2018 10:49

Probably about £4K for 10-12 days?

How about Morocco? You could split your time between the beach and somewhere else for a bit of adventure?

Ginxed · 15/07/2018 11:06

Gran Canaria is lovely at Easter, great beaches, lovely food and fabulous volcanic scenery inland.

hotcake80 · 15/07/2018 11:37

Sorry OP, but with a No Deal Brexit (which is looking very likely) no one will be able to get out of Britain. No planes or ferries will be able to travel anywhere, not just Europe. Sad

PukkaLovetea · 15/07/2018 12:03

Wow, Hotcake...I didn't think about that. You really think we'll be ground-locked?

Sorry. Hopefully not PukkaLovetea But the majority of people are happy with no deal, which means no flights. At the moment no deal looks likely.

Thanks Hotcake. It's just extraordinary. And utterly depressing! But that's another thread.

Sicily. The food alone is worth it.

hotcake80 · 15/07/2018 14:18

Hopefully it'll all get sorted. Confused PukkaLovetea
Easter time in Western Crete might be good: not too hot, lots of great ravines, stunning lagoon at Elafonisi. Easy youngsters' food. Good, cheap v comfortable public bus system. Happy holidays!

With no flights in or out of the UK how will you get there?

This from Inghams' (other Tour Operators are available)

At present, the Changes in Law [following Brexit on 29th March] that we consider are most likely to occur and, in turn, affect your chosen arrangements are as follows:

a) A potential inability for the United Kingdom as a whole (and ourselves, for the purpose of this clause and your chosen arrangements) to rely on the free movement of workers and, in particular, the Posted Workers Directive. The result of this may be that we are unable to provide you with certain services that make up your chosen arrangements, such as the provision of a local representative, chalet staff, etc.

b) A potential inability for British airlines to operate flights into / out of the European Union and, conversely, an inability for European airlines to operate into / out of the United Kingdom. The result of this may be that we are unable to provide you either with the flights that you have booked or indeed any replacement flights.

cheeseoverchocolate · 15/07/2018 16:26

How about Cuba? It's got history, beaches, nice architecture, nice old cars, good weather (outside hurricane season) and it's really cheap if you book independently.

54321go · 15/07/2018 17:04

Unless there is a 'deal' struck soon flights to ANYWHERE will be affected not just the EU. Likewise all shipping.

Iamclearlyamug · 15/07/2018 18:34

so does that mean that flights will be fine on the 28th March but not the 29th? so if I'm abroad on the 29th March I might not be able to get home?

54321go · 15/07/2018 18:42

@Iamclearly, that is a possibility.
Of course there is a LOT of negotiation to do between now and then so you will have a moderate idea of whether to take a spare T shirt with you.

PukkaLovetea · 15/07/2018 21:12

I like the sound of Western Crete...and Cuba! Thanks all x

^so does that mean that flights will be fine on the 28th March but not the 29th?*

Airlines would probably need to end flights a few days before 29th March, otherwise they will risk having crew, aircraft and passengers stranded on 29th March. Airlines also book flying and landing slots many months in advance, so by October they will need to know what the situation will be in March.

so if I'm abroad on the 29th March I might not be able to get home?

This is indeed the implication of a Hard, No-Deal Brexit. As above, people, companies and airlines cannot wait until 23.59 on 29th March to know what the post-Brexit Agreement will be - they need to know by October in order to make contingency plans. It may well be that there won't be any holidaymakers stranded abroad on that date, but that will likely be because travel companies and airlines will have stopped selling holidays for any dates after mid-March. Winter holiday companies such as Inghams (see my earlier post) are already including the possibility of there being no flights in their T&Cs

Think Monarch airlines collapse, but without ATOL or EU regs to protect us.

And for a whole country; involving not just travellers, but food, medicine and fuel.
