Have worked for a company for several years. Couple of weeks ago told I must take over the entire responsibilities of another colleague’s job. (Ie double my workload)

While I’m not happy about this - our job descriptions are so vague they can probably get away with forcing me to do it.

However, a few months ago when a male colleague in my group took over another person’s role in exactly the same situation (tho he semi-volunteered to do it rather than being told he had to) he was given a promotion and payrise

The company’s argument is that I am on ‘too much money’ (laughable) and that his increase doesn’t bring his wage up to meet what mine already is. (I started on a higher wage as I have more experience)

Am I right legally to argue that the salary isn’t the issue? The treatment should be the same?

Speak to your union rep and examine your job contract very carefully. Or consider applying for a job elsewhere. There is no way you should be doing two people’s jobs for one person’s pay.

I’ve asked them to explain exactly where in my contract it shows I can be made to do this. I’ve politely requested a pay rise 2x both times turned down. After pointing out the difference in treatment etc they have told me I must go to a meeting with HR. I don’t have a union rep and at this stage in time I can’t afford to join :-(
