"I will slit your dogs throat"...

Me, DP and 2 dogs went to an agricultural show today (very common in the summer in this part of the UK!

Lots of horses, sheep, goats, cows, kids rides, raffles, stalls and some dog show competitions (for fun - waggiest tail etc).

We were walking around the part where the cows were being kept, but keeping a fair distance (maybe 5 - 6 meters) so as not to scare the cows or the dogs. Both dogs were on leads, minding their own business (snuggling through the grass for dropped food from the various burger vans!!!!).

Some dogs that were in with the cows (so I assume farm dogs) started barking at my two, who barely glanced up and went back to snuggling. The farm dogs carried on barking as we carried on walking when one of the farmers suddenly yelled "GET THOSE FUCKING DOGS AWAY BEFORE I SLIT THEIR THROATS".

As I said before, the dogs weren't doing much of anything, weren't bothering the cows etc and dogs were allowed in this section as long as they were on leads and behaving, which they were.

I was so taken a back that I froze, and DP told him to fuck off and carried on walking. I then followed like a mute sheep and have now seethed about it all day.

AIBU to think 1. Who the hell says that to somebody and 2. To ask what you would have done?!

Shewore
He was sitting on a chair with his dogs beside him. Dp was walking behind op so not in view when looking at the bulls so how could the farmer have been stepped on?

Op was 5 meters away in am area where dogs were allowed with her dogs on a lead oblivious to the cows/bulls so we're not doing anything wrong.

Farmer was totally out of order. Just making himself feel important shouting at a woman. Bet he nearly capped himself when ops dp appeared.

I would complain to organisers. Wonder how many other women he targeted during the day?

Not saying bulls instead of cows in a post is hardly the crime of the century. These idiots give farmers a bad name. I dont know any who would talk to a woman like that.

Farmers can be obnoxious at the best of times but at the best of times a dog can cause distress to any farm animal. Having been to many of these type of events I'm amazed dogs are allowed. Even walking past an animal could cause it to be distressed! Good luck if you go to the police but dont expect them to be sympathetic.

Never been at a county fair/agricultural show where dogs were not allowed. They all have dog shows to.plus most of the people who run these things or have stalls or support local farmers and businesses especially the high end stuff and charities etc have dogs. Dont thimk.they would take kindly to.being told thier terriers and labs were not welcome😀

Even walking past an animal could cause it to be distressed!

If the farmer has such easily distressed animals, perhaps they shouldn't take them to a show, then.

The main problem is how little human contact cows/bulls get from farmers these days due to the intensive farming methods, herding by tractors, milking by machines etc.

Sounds like he'd been sampling the local cider producers to say that.

Blackness78 · 15/07/2018 06:41

You should have asked him what his probkem was.

JumblieGirl · 15/07/2018 07:04

Contact the organisers, if possible with information about the tine and location. Hopefully they’ll ban the farmer from future shows, unless your dogs actually were a threat.

wibblywobblyfish · 15/07/2018 08:38

Sorry you encountered such an idiot. Dogs are allowed at these shows and it's not compulsory for farmers to attend. I bet his bulls didn't win any prizes. Sounds like he was just looking for a suitable target to take his frustrations out on and he spotted you.
