Just used a packet of microwave rice and when I opened it I found this inside. What could it be?
I've messed about with it a bit, was one big lump when I took it out.

Looks like tinned fish (sardines or whatever) and their associated innards to me

ohdeardeardear · 14/07/2018 20:24

Looks like a frog Shock

I found something similar in microwave rice. There was a tiny hole in the packet and it had gone mouldy. Looked just like that.

Dreamscomingtrue · 14/07/2018 20:33

Looks like a kind of mould, similar to what you find when there’s a leak or a hole in a fruit juice carton. See if there’s a small hole or tear in the packaging, other from where you opened it of course.

Stoveding · 14/07/2018 20:38

Yes mould can make really bizarre, solid shapes

Timeisslippingaway · 14/07/2018 21:58

Well I had a good search, no holes in the bag. Nothing in the rest of the rice, it looked completly normal. This was just sitting on the top. The black stuff was a bit gritty the rest was kind of gooey. It's dried up now though 😕🤢

Mangled baby mouse? The bottom bit looks a bit furry.

Years ago I had something similar to this, also in a Sainsbury’s product. I took it back to the store and they sent it off to be tested. It turned out to be a lump of black grease that came off a machine in the factory. So they say, anyway... I doubt they’d have told me if it came from a rat.

They gave me £75 in vouchers. I was so disturbed by the whole thing I just accepted, but in hindsight I should have asked for cash and maybe tried for a bit more. I actually ate some of the lump and was violently sick. For months afterwards I pulled my food apart to check for foreign objects and I still have hang-ups about it now.

Put it in a freezer bag and take it to Sainsbury’s.

Call them to let them know what’s happened before you take it in.

WeeDangerousSpike · 15/07/2018 08:52

Don't take it to the store. It will either get lost or be posted back to the supplier in normal mail and be completely destroyed by postal machinery / ambient temperature.

Put it in your fridge or freezer and contact EHO if you're convinced it's an animal of some sort, they will contact the supplier.

An independant lab can examine it and say exactly what it is, you can ask that they send you packaging and pay recorded delivery for you to send directly to the lab if you are concerned about it getting 'lost'.

That sort of rice should be produced in near sterile conditions - if there's a pest problem EHO need to know. Contacting sainsburys will not trigger any kind of official investigation, they'll just ask the supplier what it is and accept their answer.

Just look at the sweetcorn listeria issue happening at the moment, people have died. Rice is inherently quite dangerous to store cooked, and things that grow in it can be fatal.

Also keep the packaging so they can trace the exact batch.
