flats over houses.

I'm currently looking for a two bed for myself and my current housemate.

I want a flat and he wants a house.

My reasonings are that properties in our price range can get a real modern flat which is walking distance into the city centre.

A house which isn't to far from the city centre will mean having to drive, find parking or having to use taxis. At the moment we live centrally and we can walk to all the bars/restaurants in less than 5 minutes - quite often we'll go out just for an hour or so which I don't think we'll end up bothering if we move to suburbia.

My second reason for not wanting to move to surburbia is that I generally find it pretty boring - we're currently in our mid twenties and we're probably spend the rest of our lives in surburbia which I want to avoid as long as possible as i find it souless, depressing and full of busybodies.

We can get a stylish flat (with decent lifts) for our price range but the houses we've viewed are dingy, uninspiring and generally feel like we're not going to find like-minded people in a 2 mile radius.

We're on such a short time frame we're going to have to find something quickly m I was just wondering what others would prefer a I do feel like the minority liking flats over houses?

I think you should both talk about what you need in your home as opposed to whether it's a flat or a house. You need to be within walking distance of the city centre. What does he want? maybe he wants a bit of outside space that belongs to you both, or wants to get away from noisy upstairs neighbours?

Personally, I need to have a garden and be within walking distance of a town centre and of countryside - that matters more than whether it's a house or a flat.

Sounds like you might have different motivations for buying.

Does your housemate want to make profit reselling in a few years? If so, a doer upper in the suburbs could be suitable.

Do you want to buy so as you are not wasting money on rent? A flat would be suitable as you can maintain your current lifestyle.

You will both need to agree on a shared end goal before you continue any further.

I hate flats, lived in a few and they are restrictive with outside space - I like to enjoy my garden, invite friends/family round for drinks, bbq’s and parties. Done have communal space but it’s jyst awkward. I hate hearing other people on either side of me, above and below.. and having to be extra considerate also. The same applies to houses, but much less so. I like having my own front door.. flat always feel so temporary, houses are home to me.
