To get a ‘summer job’

Asktheimpossible · 14/07/2018 07:50

As we’re completely broke?

What can I get relatively easily straightaway?

There's no such thing as a 'straight away easy job'. It all comes down to being at the right place at the right time. Search Indeed for temporary/summer jobs, look in shop windows, maybe contact temp agencies.

redexpat · 14/07/2018 07:55

Temp agencies. If youre willing to clean and have got transport then you will always have work.

JumblieGirl · 14/07/2018 07:55

Shift work at a supermarket. Retail in general, student-type jobs. Carehome work, summer playschemes...there’s a lot available round here. Minimum wage, so no good if you are going to have to pay for childcare, or you aren’t flexible with hours.
What skills have you got that are marketable?

Asktheimpossible · 14/07/2018 07:55

Cheers, it’s been a while since I’ve had to do this.

I did think about care work but would struggle to afford the dbs and uniform.

OP posts:
JumblieGirl · 14/07/2018 07:57

DBS takes a while to come through. Uniform is usually provided round here.

Asktheimpossible · 14/07/2018 08:00

The dbs is still around £50 Sad

I know, I’m a teacher. Sign up for the renewal service and it’s cheaper.
Walk round town and look in shop windows for ads, it’s how my children got summer jobs.

Asktheimpossible · 14/07/2018 11:18

I still can’t afford it and most companies insist on their own. I don’t think much is going on here.

OhMyGodTheyKilledKenny · 14/07/2018 12:33

TheHandmaidsTail · 14/07/2018 12:35

NewYearNewMe18 · 14/07/2018 12:35

Bar work
Cleaning

PenguinDuck · 14/07/2018 12:38

I was going to say event work (are you near any big racecourses, events). Near anywhere touristy? Hotels, restaurants etc.

Supermarkets often need summer staff. I use to work in Tesco’s during my summers when at uni.

RunMummyRun68 · 14/07/2018 12:41

Where are you based?

I think you will find you have school leavers and uni students as competition

I'm a retail manager. We don't hire for the summer, too costly

SugarIsAmazing · 14/07/2018 12:44

I thought the cost of care home DBS checks came out of the wages.

When I first moved to the UK and was just looking for any job before I ran out of money, I just printed off several dozen CVs and went from cafe to bar to theatre to small shop and literally tried everywhere. Got about three job offers that way. Also applied to every single call centre (market research & customer service - not selling) and other unskilled job (babysitting, cleaning, etc) I found on gumtree&co/newspapers. Resulted in another four job offers. Started full-time job in call center two weeks after moving here with virtually zero experience. Also did an additional full-time evening/weekend job simultaneously for several months to get a decent chunk of savings build up. Did good work in a frankly crappy job (the call centre one) - got myself promoted to infinitely less rubbish job/pay within less than two months.

VivaLaVieBoheme · 14/07/2018 12:54

Another good way to get quick money if you need a bit of a boost is to sign up to be a participant in university studies (I never did any medical research, just social sciences and imaging studies, so getting a brain MRI scan or taking IQ tests that kind of thing). Pay isn't amazing, but cash in hand and quite fun. I also did tons of focus group/market research stuff, which pays pretty well, e.g. Podengo seem to pay around £50 for 1-2hrs or so of giving your opinion generally. Also took part in online ones for them before, which I just did from home in evening.

Tartsamazeballs · 14/07/2018 12:58

Phone round local gardening firms, they often look for help in the summer months. Good money, fun outdoors physical work, often cash in hand which you will obviously, definitely, 100% declare too Grin

Undercoverbanana · 14/07/2018 12:59

Pubs are doing well in this weather.

My DD has just got a job for the uni summer break in a pub with no prior experience. She’s loving it. Being paid to have a social life. Ok so the hours are a crappy, but she can be flexible and enjoys working even when her friends pop in for a drink.

Undercoverbanana · 14/07/2018 13:01

Can you get to a posh area locally?

Get a cleaning job and earn a reputation for being reliable and good at it and word-of-mouth offers will start to come in.

JakeBallardswife · 14/07/2018 13:02

Babysitting
Take in extra ironing
Dog walking
Pet care whilst people are on holiday.
cleaning
Proof reading
Sewing / mending & repairs

Any of these could be done from home, on a casual basis.

For those of you who have student aged kids who want to earn some summer cash try looking up Flu Camp.
You stay in a medical centre in central London and get infected with a strain of flu and they observe how you react etc etc.
I think it's two weeks and I thought the financial compensation was pretty decent. You just stay in the room, watch DVDs, play Playstation, read etc to kill the time as you're in isolation. I think it's 2 weeks.

Might not be suitable for you OP if you are needed at home but I only heard about this a couple of years back. I would have done it if I knew it existed as a student.

VioletCharlotte · 14/07/2018 13:08

Have a look on Indeed. Where I live there are loads of jobs (I've been looking with teen DC). Bar work is normally pretty easy to find.
