WIBU to delete someone off my FB for sharing Irish 'jokes'...

You know how years ago people used to tell really unfunny jokes based on the premise that Irish people were stupid/alcoholic/ terrorists?

Well it pissed me off 30 years ago but in general these days people no longer tell Irish 'jokes'.

so there is this English woman on my FB that I worked and lived with years and years ago. I hardly know her as an adult tbh as we were teens back then.<

Anyway so she shares this meme that is so unfunny, I didn't even smile. Something about 'Paddy' and a lorry of turf, and him wanting to send his lawn away to be cut. 'What's dat' says his mate...

So we have the 'funny accent' and the purported 'stupidity' of the Irish being shared as hilarious.

One of the women who 'liked' it is Jewish! (I knew her back then too) Imagine if I shared a Jewish joke!!? (well I wouldn't but it would go down like a sack of shit, and rightly so)

It is a little personal to me as my dad is Irish, spent his working life as an academic. So these kind of jokes piss me off. Especially in 2018.

WIBU to defriend her and tell her why? or would that be an over-reaction?

"What do you call an Englishman in the world cup final?" "A referee".
A boastful englishman said " take away your friendliness, your mountains, glens & lochs what have you got?" "england" replied the Scot.
Now I'm English & these crack me up. I don't see a problem with this sort of joke regardless of who they're against. To me they're taking the piss out of the stereotype, not reinforcing it. If you have an Irish joke do you think that it represents all Irish people? Of course not, any more than a blonde joke represents all blondes.

" Is it because you just loooove drama? "

oh do belt up. If l loved drama I would have put a bit more than 'bye' wouldn't I?

For example no one has commented on the fact that presenter on ITV world cup commentary was being racist the other night mocking Keane - now that's different. I didn't find that funny because it was mocking him. It might have been started with the intention of them all laughing together but as soon as it became obvious that Keane was not amused then it should have ceased (and ideally been apologised for though that's unlikely on tv)

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 13/07/2018 15:01

I am not 'worked up and offended' on your behalf, love, but on my own. HTH.

Got quite a few good jokes myself 😉 Irish here from posting the heart of kerry why sweat the petty stuff 👍

Nikephorus · 13/07/2018 15:03

Actually what annoys me most is plastics
What's a plastic? (serious - it's not something I've come across and I'd assume otherwise that it referred to someone with massive implants!)

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 13/07/2018 15:04

she means I am a 'Plastic Paddy' so should therefore shut it, I think.

In fact I am English, have lived in England (and Wales) my whole life, and have had a bellyful of crap Irish jokes. Is that OK?

It’s because you’re English and (pardon the stereotype Grin) the English are well known for being able to take the piss out themselves

I repeat, not everyone has a stick up their backside.

Some people have a fully grown tree........

Lizzie48 · 13/07/2018 15:08

Exactly what Somerville said. I recently heard my friend being accused of being a “typical Irish, hating on England”, because she said that Sterling wasn’t playing well one day while watching the football. She loves football and had supported England the whole way through. It was a really venomous response to a genuinely innocent comment.

There's a vocal minority of England fans who get so upset with anyone who doesn't pay what they consider due homage to the England team. It's as if they're considered as traitors.

Ridiculous. It's a free country last time I noticed, no one has to support the England team; some of us don't even like football. Hmm

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 13/07/2018 15:08

too right Amalfi...:)

I am usually very direct but tend to suffer fools for a while.
However, a very ex-friend of mine recently posted a link to an article about Roseanne comparing Valerie Jarret to some really unkind stuff and gave out about political correctness because, in his (screwed and stupid) opinion that's how she looks like, that's not racist or an insult.
I was very open when I told him that he was stupid and a racist and I am deleting him immediately because I never ever wanted to be associated with the likes of him.
Would do the same with your friend, OP. Paddy jokes are awful and full of very stupid imperialistic stereotypes.

sonjadog · 13/07/2018 15:11

Do you think she is going to understand your motivations behind writing "bye"? Maybe you should have actually explained your problem to her before flouncing off?

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 13/07/2018 15:13

" Do you think she is going to understand your motivations behind writing "bye"? "

dunno really...perhaps you are right and I should have explained it. she always was a bit thick.

OP posts:
sonjadog · 13/07/2018 15:14

I wouldn't have thought she's understand it at all. You've lost the opportunity to educate her here.

LighthouseSouth · 13/07/2018 15:17

Oh well, she does sound thick so you're well rid.

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 13/07/2018 15:17

maybe you are right, although it might be a bit late for that tbh.

OP posts:
JaneJeffer · 13/07/2018 15:22

Actually what annoys me most is plastics who try and emphasise this stuff to burnish the Paddy bit more than the Paddy bit by getting all worked up and offended on our behalf. You’re still Plastic. Nasty post.

crispysausagerolls · 13/07/2018 15:23

Your responses on here to people are incredibly twattish “HTH”. If you stop people from making jokes - JOKES - about things like nationalities, it will descend into people not being able to make hair colour jokes or jokes about anything related to anything where someone might possibly be insulted. Grow a thicker skin for goodness sake. If you allow a joke about Irish people to upset you, it’s like you see the Irish as being weaker or lesser somehow because for some reason the joke against the English people is fine? Is it because you see the English as oppressors and the Irish as victims? I find that attitude much more offensive towards the Irish, personally. I’m not 100% why you’ve made this whole drama/thread/status flouncing “bye” bollocks when you’re not even Irish. It’s just tired virtue signalling and it’s annoying.

UneMoonit · 13/07/2018 15:25

Definitely. They're not funny, they're just stupid, infantile and often really quite offensive.

Frank Carson was the worst offender.

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 13/07/2018 15:26

love, have you any idea how many drunk/stupid Irish comments I had to put up with when I was growing up?

So no I am not 'virtue signalling' it annoys the hell out me hearing them recycled 30 years later.

OP posts:
IamaBluebird · 13/07/2018 15:33

I can probably match every Irish comment with a Welsh one. Over the years I've heard them all. Ignore and rise above it is what my Nan taught us.

Mercurial123 · 13/07/2018 15:33

Depends how much it bothers you. I've distanced myself from Irish friends their anti English views were just awful.

notacooldad · 13/07/2018 15:46

- 'my grandad told racist jokes so it's OK' is it?
So you pulled someone up because their Irish grandad told Irish jokes but you thought the racist English jokes are ok because you are English?
