To be annoyed at DH & FIL

Hi

Need some advice. My in laws live abroad & we r visiting for the week arrived today with DH & DC 8 & 5. We visit every 2 years & normally hire a car & take DC car seats with us. This year my MIL is away for the week we r here, so it was decided between my DH & FIL that there was no reason for us to hire a car as we'd all fit in his. They live in middle of no where so really need a car. I didn't think much of it but when we arrived today my FIL is driving my DH in passenger seat as hes 6' 4' DC in car seats in back & there's no seat belt in middle back seat where I'm sitting. (Im 5ft) I'm furious I wasn't pre warned this& think it's too dangerous. My DH & FIL think I'm being a bit OTT & it's only short journeys we'll be doing but I'm properly scared. Driving in this country is a bit crazy & im nervous. AIBU to insist we hire our own car?

Thank you so much for all the replies. Showed them to DH this morning who agreed & went online to book us a hire car. Picked it up at lunch time. FIL apologised & said he didn't really think about it.

Great result!

Glad you got a hire car. I imagine for your fil it's a generational or cultural thing, some older people don't seem to get the importance of seatbelts (I remember my nan used to not like them so used to try and get away with just putting it round her without plugging it in...!).

Your dh was being an idiot by firstly not backing you up, why should you feel in danger and also not caring enough about yours and everyone's safety to sort it out.

My dh is always like this abroad though and it really pisses me off, eg when a taxi gets out a completely inappropriate car seat, eg a just booster seat, for our toddler, he's fine with it and it's me that has to make a big fuss to ensure that we get the right one.

If you had minor crash - you could become a projectile and end up injuring or worse one of your children. No way

Good result! Several years ago I was in a bad car accident. Though I was the driver and not the passenger, the concept is still the same. Even a moderate crash can do damage if you are not restrained. A woman hit my car going at (so she said 50kms p/hr - sorry, I don't understand miles so I have no idea what that would be) 50km. My bra was completely severed right down the middle. I am short, and my chair pushed right to the front to reach the accelerator/break, so luckily I was wearing a seatbelt as I was informed by my GP that I my head would have gone right through the windscreen if I hadn't been.

I have been a massive fan of seatbelts since then, and a stickler for them with passengers in my car. They really do save lives, and it will likely be the one time you take that risk that someone suddenly pulls out in front of you or worse.

Glad you’re sorted OP. Two cars will give you more flexibility anyway.

@manycrisps my car does. Ever car we've had in the past five years does.
