Too fat for weight loss group..

It's been a few months since my last post and I've moved house and into a totally new area. I've joined weight watchers and I'm recovering slowly from my operation.

Anyway! I went to the drs and asked for help with losing weight. I've lost 2 stone since May but that's without really trying as I've been getting better from my operation. He referred me to a weight loss initiative that he said he had to refer me for as I was fat too fat for my height.

My BMI was 52 and now it's 48, yes I know it's appalling but I'm doing something about it.

Cut to today I get a phone call from the organiser of the weight loss group and im too fat for it. I have to have a bmi of 35 before I'm eligible to get help from the dr referred weight loss group... wtf??! How is that a thing?

So I rang the gp back and he's referred me to a dietitian and the 'weight loss management team' to discuss bariatric surgery.

How is it possible to be too fat to go to a weight loss class? Blush wake up call here you are!!

High fat? Is that a thing? Because I totally have been thinking that the Greek yogurt I've got from
M&S which is 20% fat and fucking beautiful fills me up for about 4 hours (100g) whereas a müller light well they taste gross but they don't fill me up for 4 seconds if I can finish it!

Well done on your progress. I am lucky enough to have been referred to our local NHS weight loss program and you have to be over a certain BMI to attend which sounds the right way round. In our local area, you have to attend all sessions for a year (you are allowed to miss 2 max) if you want a referral for surgery.

I've also lost about 2 stone and no one has noticed mine either...... down side of being so large to start with (started 47 BMI - now 43).

I have 6 months to go so I share your pain.....

2 stone lost without scammy groups,sugar shakes or disordered eating, just care and sense.

I think you have it covered and will continue to succeed without destructive surgery. the very best to you!

@fattygettingthim . Yes the high fat low carving is s thing called keto . However do follow one diet not lots of different ones . If this is currently working for you and you are losing keep going . Keyto and ww are very different diets which don’t work in combination

I had a chat with a trained dietician literally 4 hours ago about my weight as part of a work scheme and she recommended to me the breakfast she has: 200g of full-fat yoghurt with a handful of berries/seeds in.
She said high protein, high fat, low carb is the way to go even though it goes against what has become popular (low fat, low calorie).

I've gone from a BMI of 40.1 a few years ago to currently 36.7 through having a surge of "lets get another handful of pounds off and keep it there!", every .1 down is a SLOG and you should be proud of yourself for losing 4 whole points!

Buy a slowcooker for £12 and get an instant pot or a halogen oven. Fuck using an Aga when trying to lose weight and cook quickly.

Well done! It's great to see what you can do naturally. Even if you do end up taking the surgical route, every lb you lose counts and most importantly will make the surgery safer, and your health better. Also by making sensible lifestyle changes you are setting yourself up for long term change for you and for your family. Hope you can keep getting the support you need.

OP - check out the Diet Doctor website - they’re an excellent resource and Low Carb High Fat is an excellent way to lose weight.

I had a BMI of 50 in April - it’s now 42. I’m on a VLCD meal replacement diet (health reasons) but it works on very similar principles as LCHF.

You can do it.

Also, I got pregnant at BMI 50 and my baby is now 4 months old. It wasn’t an easy pregnancy but the baby is very healthy and happy. I’d not RECOMMEND having a baby whilst morbidly obese but it’s possible, I was not the only woman of my size pregnant and you have nothing to feel disgusting about or to blame yourself for.

I got pregnant with a BMI of 53 and I am now sat cuddling a beautiful 11 week old baby boy. Please don't blame yourself for your loss, these things happen for lots of reasons - you've been through enough without beating yourself up about it too.

I'm going to my first appt at my local nhs trust weight management clinic in September. I'm hoping for a gastric sleeve op. I have always been big, but now i need to lose and keep off at least 12 stone. The most I have ever done is 3 and that went straight back on, so I think an op is my only hope unfortunately.

What kind of thing was the referral to?! 35 is usually a cut off point... E.g. you can only use the Midwifery Led Unit to deliver if your BMI is under 35... Rather implying that below that you are low risk.

Surgery is not your only option, honestly it's not. And just because you can be referred for it doesn't mean you have to have it.

Just keep on doing what you've been doing. And pop in to the 100lbs plus thread in weight loss topic if you want to talk to people with similar amounts to lose.

@honeysucklejasmine so where I am if you're over a certain bmi you're automatically referred to a weight loss group run by the council, I rang up to book a place and they said my bmi excludes me from going as it's too high

yes high fat definitely a thing! Everyone is saying how much fuller they are. and the NHS has just begun to endorse it.

The BMI limit there is 39.9 (ie under 40) which is still annoying to have as a cut-off.

I'm sorry you've had such a tough time. I believe that your referral to the surgery team should get you access to a dietician and 1:1 support, regardless of whether you decide surgery is the way forward for you. May as well grab onto whatever support/resources might be in offer!

I second Honeysuckle's idea - have a read of the "100lbs to lose" thread(s) in weight loss chat - fantastic friendly supportive thread, range of routes being followed, and people on there who've almost made it right up to people who've just started Smile

Just wanted to say how well you've done 'on your own', two stones is brilliant. Do you really need a real life weight loss group, maybe join one of the boards on here?

YOU ARE DOING AMAZINGLY !!!!!

My guess is they are going the route as all the stats suggest that with your BMI you won't be able to lose it naturally .... BUT BUGGER THAT!!!!

I was at a weight which was over the evidence suggests you can't do it without surgical intervention... and I did lose it without... we are out there and it sounds like you are one of them

So just recognise you are taking on a big challenge but if you are making it the most important thing in your life YOU CAN DO IT... and don't underestimate it, it is hard work and draining....

So be kind to yourself and congratulate yourself on how brilliantly you are doing!!!!

And yes, support whether online or in the form of a group REALLY helps... I found a wonderful online group and we became really supportive mates to each other..

My other top tip - find treats for yourself that don't involve food! So you can treat yourself when you need to....

You’re doing so well!
How about treating yourself to a microwave? It’s great for quick scrambled or poached eggs.
Jacket potatoes are another quickie in the microwave (albeit without a crispy skin) and super filling.
Have some low fat microwave meals in the freezer for emergencies (obviously home cooked is better but they’re amazing if you get home and can’t be bothered!).
Overnight oats are good for breakfasts.

The barriatric teams will have physiotherapists and dietitians, much better help than the usual weight loss groups.

High fat diet is good for weight loss, but doesn’t bode well for maintaining. Best bet is to start as you mean to continue, with half the plate being veggies etc. It might take a little longer to lose weight, but you’ll be healthier and will have developed good habits. You’re already on the right track...keep doing what you’re doing for as long as it works!

Others posters are correct about cooking. LCHF (low carb high fat) is very cooking intensive unless you buy cooked meats and eat raw veggies. Alongside consideing buying s slow cooker, you could also buy a portable hob and have your aga turned up in the winter. Then use your aga to batch cook etc in the summer.

Idk about whether or not LCHF is sustainable long term. I know some people, who do it very successfully. I did it for a while but my health deteriorated - nothing to do with the diet and I craved carb and was too ill to resist. (I’ve just had a hysterectomy and the weight is coming off me as my body is no longer poisoning me but not in the LCHF zone).

The 2 stone is just the tip of an iceberg. You are going to plough through this. I've just lost about 50lbs (It's taken me a while)

From my experience here is what burnt the fat:
Cut out bread
Cut out pasts
Anything sugary
Focus on healthy fats (nuts, avocado) .
Fish
Lean meats if you eat meat
I do 0% Greek yogurt but the full fat is a good starter
Only drink water or tea/coffee

I really noticed a difference when those bad carbs were eliminated. .
I also used occasionally physillium husks. It's insoluble fiber that fills you up and bulks your stool significantly.

It's so hard right noe but it will get easier! It will melt off you once you get into it. Haooy to share any more details. Good luck

Hi... I joined slimming world and worked hard although actually enjoyed it too...I lost 4 st in 5 months and the amount of food u eat means it doesn't feel like a diet if u get me.?
I am now pregnant and apparently it's due to the weightloss as I was told I couldn't have children because of my pcos.
I am still following slimming world and will keep going until I get to my idea of a good weight (12st) which would be a total of 10st loss. I aim to get there by next summer.... if it's something u really want to do then you will do it and feel great for it too....
Doctors have a way of making people feel worse about their weight which doesnt encourage people to do something about it.... im getting it alot because of the pregnancy and how they say i will have problems during birth because of my weight...it seems like such a big challenge but once u see the weight coming off makes u want to carry on.....good luck with it Star

I was referred to the weight loss clinic at bariatric surgery dept. I've lost 4 stone, no longer heavy enough for surgery. It was GREAT - I saw a consultant about being diabetic (He changed my meds), a psychologist, a specialist nurse and a nutritionist. Far more helpful than any group id tried
