It seems to really annoy some people. How come? I think it is very interesting.

OP posts:

The first one by a crematorium assistant was interesting.

Now they are taking over active convos, including the piss-taking ones.

We’ve had repeats of cabin crew & sex workers as people don’t check what’s been posted previously.

Titilation outweighs the factual in a lot of cases imo

SwedishEdith · 12/07/2018 23:49

I assume lots (most?) are made up. And they've taken over AC.

bluetrampolines · 12/07/2018 23:52

A lot of them seem very real.

OP posts:
starzig · 12/07/2018 23:53

My default is active chat and that along with feminist completely hijacking the whole active thread. Would be fine if they remotely hooked me in but opened a few and they are really dull.

hazeyjane · 12/07/2018 23:55

Because they are not the font of all knowledge on their profession

Because I feel snugged over by them

Because I feel uncomfortable when posters talk about very specific situations and people

Because half of them are probably posted by bullshitters

HarryDresdensLeatherDuster · 12/07/2018 23:57

Because they are as boring as!

starzig · 12/07/2018 23:57

I sometimes find them a bit attention seeking.

KlutzyDraconequus · 13/07/2018 00:08

It's a ridiculous topic on a site like MN.
Advice and support for parents by parents.
Not 'Hey everyone look at me me me me me.. ama about my fab life and I'll give you my very very very narrow experience of it arent I fabulous?'

And then there's the ones like 'Im a personal assistant for a movie star AMA... Except who the star is' well what's the point.. if you can't prove how your are, fuck yourself.

Go to Reddit for AMA. They have a whole section of it and they demand proof of the person's claim before the topic starts.

As you can tell.. I'm not the AMAs biggest fan... Lol

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 13/07/2018 00:13

Because it's not verified in any way like it is on reddit.

People could be talking dangerous claptrap that is being gobbled up by the unthinking masses.

flowery · 13/07/2018 00:17

Attention seeking

SlothSlothSloth · 13/07/2018 03:30

There was one where I wasn’t totally sure I believed the OP was a sex worker as she said, but in any case there was another poster in the thread claiming to be a sex worker who I felt VERY clearly wasn’t. I sometimes feel there’s no point reading about anything on here because anyone can say anything and it makes it so hard to invest. That’s the main problem with the AMAs: they require you to totally buy into what the OP is claiming, and if you can’t do that then they’re just such pointless boring threads.

MistressDeeCee · 13/07/2018 03:35

I didn't mind them at first.

But they get boring quickly as OPs will answer questions initially then it's "oh I've just got to pop off and do something". They may or may not return by the time 10 more questions have been asked so I lose interest, since they're not being interesting are they. In which case why even bother to put up an AMA thread.

FurryDice · 13/07/2018 03:44

Because they are all over active chat like bad case of herpes.

Monty27 · 13/07/2018 03:49

Because it's annoying egotistical shit. Who's idea was it? Confused

FurryDice · 13/07/2018 03:52

It’s like the talkboard equivalent of watching overactive children ‘flossing’

BitOfFun · 13/07/2018 04:07

I've hidden the topic, so I can look at it if I particularly want to, but it doesn't take over Active Convos.

I agree though that it's basically shite without any verification of authenticity.

Snappedit · 13/07/2018 04:23

The gynae threads a good read and maybe the government should see how women have to resort to asking strangers online as their health problems are dismissed by gps/hcps in the nhs.
Similarly I liked the one by the midwife.
Those two posters genuinely seem to want to help.
Some of the others I’ve seen are a bit meh/scream that the op is an attention seeker.

Snappedit · 13/07/2018 04:25

It’s like a few years ago a womens physio called Gussie grips diid a thread and it was very informative (although not ask me anything).

KinkyAfro · 13/07/2018 07:29

Thankfully they have a board of their own for the AMA threads, only decent one was the crematorium, the rest were shite

GorgonLondon · 13/07/2018 07:30

On Reddit (where the idea is copied from) they verify all AMAs (privately). Mumsnet should do the same.

PolkerrisBeach · 13/07/2018 07:32

Just hide the topics you don't like.

SoyDora · 13/07/2018 07:33

What irritates me the most is that they only answer the questions they actually want to answer, so it’s not really’AMA’. Also, as pointed out above, there’s absolutely no proof that these people are who they say they are.
Plus I’m sick of seeing it all over active.

surferjet · 13/07/2018 07:35

AMA has taken over MN that’s for sure!

Dhalandchips · 13/07/2018 07:37

I didn't realise people were. I did one because I genuinely get asked a lot of the same questions, and thought it would be useful/helpful to share some information about my experiences. I'm not actually that interesting, but it's been nice chatting to people. Some of the others have been fascinating, others heartbreaking. Not sure it's attention seeking, more a desire to help break taboos or help people in similar situations.

Arianagrandestattoo · 13/07/2018 07:58

Because it’s attracting vulnerable people or people talking about vulnerable people.

Bad combination.
