To ask for advice about this hedgehog!

I am posting here for traffic. We rescued a little hedgehog yesterday. It was out on a grass verge in the day surrounded by crows. He is in a box and has had plenty of food and water, when he first got to the water he had such a big drink he must have been so thirsty. We have now had him 2 days. He is eating well, drinking well, walking about, going to the toilet, shiny eyes etc so I am as confident as I can be that all is well but he is just so small. What do I do, I don't think he warrants a trip to a rescue centre as he is in good health. Do I just release him or keep hydrating/feeding for a couple of days?

I forgot I still had these. He originally came in with his brother but l had to have him PTS. Something (I suspect mum) had attacked him and his insides were starting to fall out Sad

The one who survived was a strong little critter.

We called him Tyson as he was such a fighter. Was sad to see him go but I was so proud aswell

Have you managed to find a rescue centre? Give bhps a call and they should recommend one. So much can go wrong at such a young age and he/she should still have specialist milk (not cow's milk). Often orphaned hoglets can become ill around 6weeks old when whatever parasite caused the orphaning matures in the hoglet. We run a rescue in Yorkshire. Hoglets are really hard work and has been said - STINK. Though they are very cute!

@HedgehogHERBY yes. He is being delivered to a lovely lady who is already caring for 18 tomorrow evening! He will be missed but the stink won't be!

That's excellent news. We have 70 at the moment. There are cartoon style smell lines coming from the roof. You've done the right thing. Hopefully they can be returned to you for release.

Such a sad evening. Little Tiggywinkle died Sad. We are all a bit shocked and sad but I can't think what else we could have done. Rest in peace little one

Really sorry to hear that donuts, but at least he died with a full tummy and taken care of.

Soubriquet · 13/07/2018 21:54

Oh no!! Any ideas as to why?

NicoAndTheNiners · 13/07/2018 21:55

Well done for trying.

donutsarelife · 13/07/2018 21:57

@Soubriquet no idea, he was fine and then he was gone

Bless him. He likely had something wrong inside if he has passed.

HedgehogRescueHERBY · 14/07/2018 08:42

Oh no I'm so sorry. I'm afraid it happens quite a bit. It's one of the reasons I bang on about them being at a rescue because then if it happens it is not as awful for the finder. We never get used to losing a hedgehog no matter the age and I cry every time but I always hope to protect others from the same feelings. The need so much stuff at 200g as well, heatpads, milk replacement and some still need blended food so finders have to chose to allow the 'hog slop' to be mixed in the same blender as the human family food! All very difficult. I'm so sorry you experienced this but all any of us want is someone that cares at the end of our days and you gave that to this little hog.
