to not go to hospital with potentially broken toe?

and to just deal with it at home?

ExH is moaning at me to go get an x-ray. I really don't see the point.

The only reason I would go to hospital with a broken toe is if it’s obviously displaced or it was a big toe because they need dressing / assessing properly . Hope it feels better soon .

Walkingdeadfangirl · 12/07/2018 18:28

Not much a hospital can do for a broken toe. Keep your weight off it as long as possible. I wouldn't fancy sitting in A&E for 4 hours for no reason, other than to get a nice picture of my toe.

NotAsGreenAsCabbageLooking · 12/07/2018 18:28

There is no point, they won’t do anything.

I broke mine once, on a Saturday afternoon. I eventually went hospital on the Monday morning as I couldn’t walk... ideally, I wanted crutches so I could do the school run.

They took off all the strapping/support that I’d put on, confirmed it was broken then sent me home. So I had to rebandage myself and still no crutches.

Really wish I’d not bothered 😕

HoleyCoMoley · 12/07/2018 18:30

I would get x-ray if it was big toe, if it was really painful, bruised, swollen, tingling. Better to be safe,

Squidgee · 12/07/2018 18:33

its the 4th toe, its going a lovely shade of purple, and swollen up, but I've broken this one before (kicked a trampoline, ouch) so I was just planning on popping to Tesco and getting some gauze and taping it to the middle toe!

Nikephorus · 12/07/2018 18:36

I've broken my little a couple of times & left it to heal on its own. Didn't even tape it because that would have driven me mad.

HonestTeacher · 12/07/2018 18:36

I have broken a few toes (clumsy). The hospital will not do anything unless it is a big toe. Just bandage it yourself. It will heal on its own.

FortyFacedFuckers · 12/07/2018 18:39

You should only go if it’s the big toe was the advise nhs 24 gave me

olympicsrock · 12/07/2018 18:41

Pointless to go. Rest ice elevate ibuprofen and consider strapping to the neighbouring toe. They wouldn’t X-ray it. Ex A and E doctor here....

tararabumdeay · 12/07/2018 18:42

Taping it to the other toe may result it healing in the wrong position. Let the professionals have a look even if there's nothing much to do. Ask them, 'Will I be able to dance professional ballet when it's better?'

If they say yes then reply, 'That's amazing because I couldn't before.'

Chrisinthemorning · 12/07/2018 18:43

Unless it’s the big toe YANBU.
I have stupidly long skinny toes and have broken one quite a few times. Strap it to the toe next door with micropore or similar.
Mine take about 2-3 weeks to heal.
Hurts like hell when I do it though Flowers

Aprilshouldhavebeenmyname · 12/07/2018 18:43

Broke my little one on Monday. Dh and the ddog have both stood on it since.
May have a bottle of lager later as pain relief!
When dd was a teen, drunk, went down a bannister and broke her big toe, we sat in casualty for 6 hours for them to send us home after having done sweet fa.
Have Wineop, you will be fine.

BrizzleMaverick · 12/07/2018 18:58

Instead of A & E what about a minor injuries unit? Always 111 if you are in lots of pain with it later.

Sittingonaspindryer · 12/07/2018 19:03

I broke one of mine (also a 4th toe) about 6 months ago on what would have been one of the busiest days for A&E. Spent Jan and Feb in flip flops but didn't bother going to a hospital as everything I read on the NHS website suggested it wasn't needed except for big toes. It's still an odd shaped but it always was.

bruffin · 12/07/2018 19:10

DS broke his toe, it was still bruised about a month later so went to the MIU, yes it had been broken but they said they only do anything if it was the metatarsals.

Came home , he ran down the stairs to answer the stairs and somehow broke the toe again.

Thisnamechanger · 12/07/2018 19:11

Buddy tape Ice and painkillers

speakout · 12/07/2018 19:14

Another one here saying don't bother.

I have had a couple of broken toes.

Unless it is out of alignment or the big toe then strap it with tape and take painkillers.

Hospital won't do much else.

BarbiesPinkShoes23 · 12/07/2018 19:17

I 'd say go to minor injuries to get it checked. I broke my little toe 6 weeks ago, didn't go to A&E, just strapped it up. 6 weeks later it's still not right. I've broke a 4th toe and the other little toe but this one isn't healing like the others did. So I'd go for piece of mind. Take care OP

HarryDresdensLeatherDuster · 12/07/2018 19:18

I have broken several over the years and normally just leave them and they helming. Did one a couple of years ago though which I should probably have had checked as it hurt for about 6 months and is now rather deformed. Hindsight is a great thing Grin.

TheLittleThingsLikeVodka · 12/07/2018 19:19

I wouldn’t bother, better off sitting with it elevated at home than having to wait in a&e for hours

PeterPiperPickedSeaShells · 12/07/2018 19:31

As everyone had already said - we do not X-ray toes (unless it's the big toe). If it's broken or not the management will not change (strap it to the toe next to it) so it is not worth exposing you to the radiation in the X-ray.
I am a nurse practitioner in an urgent care centre

Singlebutmarried · 12/07/2018 20:38

Tape it to the toe next to it.

They’ll only fuss if it’s the big toe.

Stock up on paracetamol

Aprilshouldhavebeenmyname · 12/07/2018 21:12

I just remembered, ds broke his big toe playing footy last year, sat all smug to his mates I would be picking him up, time off school blah blah.
School rang and returned message to him : "have spoken to your dm pupil and she said we can keep you"
Ds arrived home and told me I was the worst dm in the world!! Ha ha!!
Oh and ddog stood on his also!
A rottweiler no less!!

scaryteacher · 12/07/2018 21:17

Broke my little toe about a month ago. Today was the first time I have been able to get a pair of (very wide) fitflop MaryJanes on as I had to go to a function tonight and needed to wear a. shoe. It hurts like hell. Back to normal fitflops from now on. I can't even wear a soft slipper.

I didn't bother with the doc as they wouldn't have done anything. I lazed around with it up until I could walk on it, and driving didn't happen for a bit.

mavismcruet · 12/07/2018 21:19

Minor injuries unit or practice nurse is the place to start. They will probably just stabilise it.
My dh has broken a few toes in his adult life. Nothing significant can be done except making sure it is straight and supported. Dh didn’t get his first broken one straight and he now has a wonky toe.
