Not quite an AIBU, hopefully it doesn't come across as a goady thread.....but I got thinking back to my school days recently after talk of planning a reunion was mentioned on FB.

Sometimes on MN there's a few Private v State threads where sometimes it's said that some state comps are described as having no ambition for their students and the students don't achieve their full potential etc.
So, as my youngest dc is about to go to our state comp in Sept, it got me thinking.
I think my friends and acquaintances from school have done quite well. I left in 1990. I have no idea if it was a 'good state school' as we had no concept of that. However, I suppose it must have been.

I'm still in contact with.....

2 MP's
Doctor
Architect
Actor
Fairly well known TV Presenter
4 x Primary School Teachers
5 x Secondary School Teachers
Nurse
Hippy (but happy) Dropout in Thailand
Award winning Author
BBC Radio Producer
Owner of Greeting Card Company
Carpenter
Astro Physicist
Product Designer
Independent Pre-School Nursery Owner
Veterinary Nurse
Stand Up Comedian

Obviously there's a vast amount of people I'm not in contact with anymore who could be doing awful stuff!

I'm quite proud of 'us'. But AIBU to think that it's not that unusual? I think my bunch have done well in a vast variety of subjects. Maybe not and my view is skewed?

Just interested to know others experiences.

I cant even imagine staying in touch with that amount of people from school tbh. Do you think you might be showing off a bit?

My little friend from junior school became a TV presenter, no idea what happened to anyone else.

Omgineedanamechange · 12/07/2018 10:44

I’m in touch with most of mine, and I’m in my fifties. Facebook is a wonderful thing.

One fairly famous multi millionaire.
One a doctor in Australia
Most of the rest are average joes with random average jobs, middle managers, care worker, drivers etc.
And sadly at least six, all male, are dead.

Buster72 · 12/07/2018 10:45

The head girl, captain of the swimming and athletics team, straight A student.....
Became an exotic dancer....

Thundercracker · 12/07/2018 10:46

That's quite the list. Two MPs in your friendship group?!

PirateWeasel · 12/07/2018 10:46

Wow, there's a lot of variety there! That can only be a good thing, showing imagination and different interests, rather than a class full of people all doing the same thing "because everyone else is". No matter whether state or private, obviously everyone cared enough to make some clear decisions about what to do next with their life ... which, let's face it, can be hard at 16/18! Did you have a good careers department?

Thundercracker, not my friendship group really - as in we don't see each other all the time and 'speak' regularly, but we're in touch on Facebook and if we saw each in the pub we would definitely have a drink together.

OP are you sure you have 2 MP from one academic year? If so that is a mighty fine school, care to share the MP name?

Trampire · 12/07/2018 10:59

Buster, god no. I couldn't share the names. One has been an MP for 3 terms and the other is a new MP from the last election.

Different areas of the country, different parties.

1 Dr
1 American 'soccer' coach
8 teachers
5 Nurses / HCA's
1 solicitor
1 children's mental health worker
Several middle-management professionals
1 swanky pub / restaurant owner
Several shop-assistant / customer services / large supermarket employees (it's a big employer where I grew up)
Many SAHM's
Several people who went into IT
2 engineers
Several small business owners- building firms / hairdressers / beauty / etc

A few are unemployed / unwell

At least 2 that I know of died in accidents and 1 from illness

Some are just starting families, some had their first just as we left- aged 18/19

All pretty typical, I'd say!

Snowysky20009 · 12/07/2018 11:04

State school, mine includes:-

Primary school teachers
Secondary school teachers
Head teachers
University lecturers (one oxford)
Solicitors
Barristers
Architects
Multiple small business owners
Social workers
Nurses
District nurses
Author
Actress
Models (male and female)
MP
Child minder
Nursery worker
Learning and development- mangers/trainers/assessors
Risk assessment manager
Corporate managers
Accountants
Builders
Plumbers
Electricians
Chefs
Mental health support workers
Carers

Where there is an 's' obviously means more than one went into this profession.
Being honest I've never thought about it until writing it down now- not bad for a 'state' school!

Snowysky20009 · 12/07/2018 11:05

Opps missed out

GP
Consultants
Dr (I don't know what grade etc)

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 12/07/2018 11:06

" god no. I couldn't share the names. "

well you could, as they are in the public eye anyway. Of course, if they don't exist, then no, you couldn't.

Trampire · 12/07/2018 11:07

Eyerolls & Snowsky, brilliant stuff!
It's weird when you sit and write it down isn't it.

Ok Fourfried, I understand that you don't believe me. That's up to you. It's fine.

I don't want to share the names because it could be identifying slightly, seeing as I haven't name changed and one in particular is super careful over social media.

Professions of my old school friends involve...

Marketing/Advertising/PR (majority)
SAHMs
Mature student

Estate Agent

Just under half of us have kids now in our late 20s/early 30s. I'm only vaguely in touch with a couple of them now sadly but Facebook helps!

RhubarbRhubarbRhubarbRhubarb · 12/07/2018 11:14

Nothing all that out of the ordinary afaik.

From school, I’m still in touch with 2 x civil servants, an ad exec, a vet, a statistician who is also a fairly famous Paralympian (that one’s quite cool actually), who won a gold medal a few years ago, someone who works in publishing and a sahm.

From university, 2 x primary teachers (weirdly, as my university didn’t offer primary teaching as a degree. They both did first degrees in other subjects and then went on to do postgrads), 2 x IT workers (something to do with coding I think), an M.D. of a robotics company, an oil & gas, a formula 1 engineer, (that one’s also quite cool), a pharmacist, something to do with communications (one of my closest friends but I actually don’t know exactly what her job is Blush) and something to do with logistics. The last two used to work in fashion and that was also really cool, but both left the industry for various reasons.

schoty77 · 12/07/2018 11:16

I had a small group of friends, but I still keep in touch with every one of them! We're Catholic Private School girls if that helps.

-Phd in Clincial Psych, practising
-Phd in Organic Chem, working in US
-Phd in Chem, working in a lab
-MA in Engineering, teaching
-Peds Doctor
-2x Nurses
-2x Teachers
-Health Recruiter
-Musician/Activist
-and me! I'm a screenwriter and author, former teacher.

Not too bothered what the others in my year level got up too. I know one is a pretty famous model and another was on my countries version of Dancing with the Stars for some reason. Lot of doctors/nurses I think.

vampirethriller · 12/07/2018 11:21

PurpleMac · 12/07/2018 11:30

We left school after A Levels in 2009.

One is working for an interational aid charity.
We also have a coder, a doctor, hairdressers, beauticians, a shepherdess, an expat now living in USA, a radio DJ, two actresses, some stay-at-home mums, some working in retail, and some civil servants.

A real mixed bag, but all quite happy and satisfied with what they are doing!

CaptainHammer · 12/07/2018 11:31

Out of the ones I know or have seen on Facebook. Left my fairly good state school in 2003.

2 nurses
2 HCA’s
2 cabin crew
3 accountants
5 SAHM
1 hairdresser
1 legal secretary
4 teachers
2 child minders
3 musicians
1 chef
1 dance school owner
1 glamour model/dancer

Sadly 2 have passed away from suicide and 1 from a car crash.
