Does anyone else feel like their decor is shit?!

I watch programmes like Location Location Location etc and it makes me feel like my house is utter shit.

Never had time to “homemake” working full time and bringing up 3 kids alone. Does that make me a bit crap? Sad

Are there any hacks?

I find Next and TK Maxx great for nick nacs and accessories etc.

Ours is unchanged from when the old lady before us had the house. It's passable but is in dire need of redecorating - the gloss is chipped, the wallpaper is peeling in places and just looks dated. We don't have the money to do it up though, unfortunately.

Is anyone on the Hous Folk group on Facebook!? The houses on there are all beautiful... but I can't spend too much time on there as it just makes me feel a bit rubbish about our house.

find Instagram makes our house feel very inferior too Sad it's a rented house & even though we could change things & redecorate a bit, we can't afford to.
Most of our furniture is all second hand too, which isn't a bad thing, but does look a bit mismatched.

The cheaper £1.99 house magazines are worth a look - homestyle, your home. They have lots of ideas for stuff from supermarkets or online plus more realistic featured houses/flats like 2 bed new builds.

It's good to know that the interior design magazines are just like those skinny models with perfect skin :)

There was a programme about Ikea and they did an episode on creating the new magazine front and you could see how falsified it was

I am just rubbish at putting colours together and the like.

I know someone with a listed building and their decor is beautiful. Perhaps I should get then to do my house :D

I don’t think mine is shit but I had to compromise a lot as husband’s tastes were vastly different.

We’re not living together at the moment so I’m slowly changing it. If we decide he is coming back I’m sure he’ll like it. It’s just that I’ve never been able to convince him beforehand and he comes from a long line of indecisiveness so I got into a terrible habit of latching on to the first thing he said he liked and going from there.

My general rules are walls are white, grey or soft blue. I mix basic clean Scandinavian design with the odd vintage piece.

Dressing is tricky but I think more is less and is mainly done with houseplants and flowers.

And I go for a limited amount of timeless, unfussy patterns with the odd bit of boho thrown in.

Ultimately though I think nowadays the key is to go to Pinterest, pick an image and emulate it as best as you can.

How do people find time to find the Knick knacks and then find places for them?

We don't as we cannot stand clutter. We have a handful of things sitting out that mean something to us, mainly objects we have picked up on our travels, literally.

If you shop in bigger supermarkets, it doesn't take long to occasionally check out their homewares while you're there. They sometimes have really nice things at fair prices. But mostly I think it's just a question of priorities. For some people, making their homes look perfect is their main hobby and so they spend lots of time and money on it. That's fine if that's what they want. But no one should feel bad if they've chosen to spend their time and money on other things, especially if those other things are your kids. Who, I promise, do not care at all about whether you have nice pictures on the walls or if the cushions all match.

Hey, you don’t need a lot of money or time for that matter. I’m self employed and I have a few jobs that are demanding. If you know what your doing you can decorate and upcycle etc without it breaking the bank, Take it from someone who has less money than the average wage. Take some time to look into it when you can and let your imagination run wild and if your a bit creative you can do more and think of ways you can make your own without spending a fortune. Hope this helps
