AIBU? Smoking in the car

RayRae19 · 11/07/2018 14:23

My OH and I share a car, and he lets his friend smoke in there (and I suspect he does aswell) when they are driving to and from work.
I've asked him not to as it blows all the ash around and the back seat and my LO's car seat get ash on them. He says it's ok because usually she's not in the car for ages after and he sprays it with Oust.

I'm not sure how long chemicals etc linger in the car?
OH has the car all week for work, I use it only to get the supermarket shop or on occasions I really need to drive.
LO and my step son only go in it on weekends or if my OH picks LO up from nursery.

AIBU to ask that he doesn't smoke in there? Could the old ash and residual chemicals be harmful?

I'm an ex-smoker myself so I'm not really judging them for smoking, just not somewhere the kids will be. My OH wouldn't even pick LO up half an hour after having a smoke as per NHS guidelines, but he would have her travel in an environment that's been filled with it?!

YANBU he shouldn’t smoke in the car that you share. You could always say you feel a bit wheezy with second hand smoke and it absolutely stinks. I don’t know why DH let's his friend keep smoking in the car when you hate it so much

TeddyIsaHe · 11/07/2018 14:26

You are not BU. Look up third hand smoke and show him. Oust will do bugger all, the carcinogens are impregnated in the fabric, so unless he’s having it professional cleaned after every cigarette it’s still an issue.

Bombardier25966 · 11/07/2018 14:31

I'm a smoker and think smoking in cars is grim, even when it's your own car. The stale smoke builds up in the fabrics and no amount of Oust will really clear them.

EdWinchester · 11/07/2018 14:34

It's disgusting to smoke in a car full stop. Tell him not to.

You will have real trouble selling it on, too.

Clubcuts · 11/07/2018 14:35

Yanbu

FASH84 · 11/07/2018 14:37

It stinks, and will affect resale if nothing else. I know barely anyone who even smokes anymore let alone in a car, ugh

InDubiousBattle · 11/07/2018 14:39

YANBU it must stink.

MaryShelley1818 · 11/07/2018 14:40

YANBU - that is absolutely vile. It’ll stink as well as the dangerous chemicals.
Is smoking whilst driving not illegal?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 11/07/2018 14:42

Not quite, Mary

Smoking with children in the car is...

www.gov.uk/government/news/smoking-in-cars-with-children-banned-from-today

Dazza284428 · 11/07/2018 14:46

My Dads mum smokes in the car and it absolutely wreaks.
You can tell she's been in it when we go food shopping at the weekend. The smell will linger as well, it's really not great and quite selfish if no one else smokes but she's puffing away, then we have to use it.
I actually smoke as well but would not smoke in the car, just for the pure fact that it stinks to high heaven.

Bluelady · 11/07/2018 14:52

No, smoking while driving isn't illegal. It's really antisocial if you share a car though. Having said that, we probably inhale more carcinogens when we walk down a street with heavy traffic than from third hand smoke. Ironically particularly small children in buggies because they're closer to the source of the emissions.

InDubiousBattle · 11/07/2018 14:56

Smoking whilst driving is one of those things I almost assume is illegal because, well it should be. How distracting must it be if you drop a lit cigarette into your car whilst driving?

MaryShelley1818 · 11/07/2018 15:03

Ah ok...I wasn’t sure but thought I’d been told it is now classed as driving without due care and attention (the same as you can be stopped for eating/drinking whilst driving)

SluttyButty · 11/07/2018 15:09

Bleurgh, I smoke but would never dream of smoking in the car nor would I allow anyone else too either.

Hillarious · 11/07/2018 15:25

How long is the commute that they can't not smoke during that time?

littlecabbage · 11/07/2018 15:46

mononoaware1907 · 11/07/2018 15:57

Ehwewee, I am a smoker and I NEVER smoked in my car. Been driving for 6 years, including some very long journeys, but always pulled over when I felt the need. It's disgusting

MMM3 · 11/07/2018 18:04

Put a cover on the car seat when your child isn’t using it. That will eliminate the ash and cut down on everything else. They make covers or you could use an old blankie. Ask that he keep the windows down when someone is smoking, and also when LO is in the car.

It isn’t ideal, it’s actually a bit gross, but the child isn’t in the car very much anyway and... you did marry a smoker. It sounds like he’s being fastidious otherwise, and at a pretty darned unusual compliance level for a smoker, so in the overall scheme I think I’d let him have this one. PROVIDED he covered the seat and aired the car.

But for the love of god tell him to stop adding a chemical spray to try and solve the problem.

RayRae19 · 11/07/2018 19:56

Thanks everyone, I've been going on about this for ages and OH keeps ignoring me so I was starting to think I was just a moaner but it really bothers me. Their journey is only 30 mins!

Thanks especially for the links, might print the info out and leave it on the dash board lol.
Good idea @MMM3 about putting a cover on though, might create one.
