Am I being ridiculously cheeky?

I work in the vaping industry, and I'm quite heavily involved in sales and promotion for 3 separate companies. (they all know about each other and are fine about it, no conflict of interest etc)
There is a show coming up at the end of August that I've been asked to attend with company A. It's not obligatory to attend, and I won't be paid, however if I do go they'll pay for travel, hotel, food etc. However, I've just been informed that I'm only really needed there to 'show my face' for a bit and then I'll just be sitting/standing about.
Company B has said that after the required time of 'showing my face' they're willing to pay me £95 per day to do some promotion, networking with other companies etc on their behalf. However, I don't know how 'cheeky fuckerish' that would be of me, and don't really want to ask company A til I have some opinions. Please don't be too harsh on me, I've not been in this situation before!

I'm not really sure it's cheeky as such but I think if you are there as a rep for company A it would then be odd to be promoting company B.

That said, I'm also not sure why you would go for company A if you aren't being paid - okay expenses are covered but would you be going if it wasn't for work? If not then I would either ask company A to pay you, or don't go for company A and attend on behalf of company B but ask that they cover expenses as well.

SpandexTutu · 11/07/2018 10:05

It is not a good idea to have company A cover your expenses while you are working for company B.

Babyroobs · 11/07/2018 10:06

Why are you even involved in promoting this harmful activity anyway ?

FuckMyUterus · 11/07/2018 10:09

babyroobs go fish somewhere else 😘
Thanks for the genuine responses, think I'm going to just attend on behalf of company B, thought it'd be a bit CF.

elessar I'd be going regardless of whether it was work related or not, as I've been heavily involved in the industry for 4 years now.

FuckMyUterus, I understand your position but I think honesty is the best policy Smile. Speak to company A, if they're not paying you and they know you work for other companies alongside theirs, why would they mind? Girl's gotta eat Wink

Shortstuff08 · 11/07/2018 10:34

Its not ok to work for company B while A cover your expenses, especially at the same show.

I would possibly speak to A and mention it though to see what they think.

TeeBee · 11/07/2018 10:41

I work in the pharmaceutical industry and its common for us to have multiple sponsors for our attendance at meetings. You just need to clarify what it is company A is sponsoring you to do. So if company A wants you to attend so many hours per day on their behalf you can agree and let them know that another company is sponsoring your remaining time doing x, y and z. So long as you're upfront with them and you are fulfilling their expectations on what they are paying for, I don't see the problem. Though why you would attend a meeting for someone who is not paying for your time and is only covering your expenses, I don't know.

AnnieAnoniMoose · 11/07/2018 10:44

Which works out a better deal?

Expenses paid by A or £ by B?

I’d be upfront with both companties and see what they say. It doesn’t sound like either Exocet you to do much, they know you work for both, so I’d suggest doing the work & getting the rewards for both - they’ll probably be open to that if there’s no conflict of interest,

TeeBee · 11/07/2018 10:49

If you only work for B, they should be covering your expenses too. Working for both of them would work all round if they can both get what they want for only part of the cost, and you get your expenses and your time billed. Win win. Just be straight up with them though.

FuckMyUterus · 11/07/2018 11:10

Yeah maybe best to speak to both and see if I can help both out with a mutual agreement. Thank you!

I agree with TeeBee. Unless it's changed a lot since I worked in the industry about 3 years back, it tends to be very friendly between companies especially the specialist providers e.g. the company I worked for supplied both their own and other makes of equipment & liquids.

KurriKurri · 11/07/2018 11:19

Yes I agree - speak to both and tell them your dilemma, if they don;t view each other as rivals they can probably come to some agreement. They are both getting a reasonable deal from you because they should really both be offering you pay and expenses, so in their interests to co operate with you.

Having done a few promo shows, I'd prefer to be doing something rather than sitting around showing face.

JessicaJonesJacket · 11/07/2018 11:41

I'd ask them tbh. 'Standing/sitting around' is what you do at industry shows.

FuckMyUterus · 11/07/2018 12:42

Thanks ladies, spoken to company A and they've agreed to split expenses with company B and somehow also agreed to split my pay and upped it to 120 a day between them! Very happy!
