To think that footballers should only be able to play for the city they're from?

I know it would never happen but it would stop football being all about money. It would stop teams like Man Utd dominating the premier league simply because they have money. It would stop the ridiculous £5m a week type wages, it would make cities invest more in young people (currently, why would Hull City bother when they know that anyone decent will bugger off to the premier league once they have the opportunity) - it wouldn't make football be about community, talent, pride and football rather than money.

I mean, how does Man Utd represent Manchester when most of their players (if not not all) are from various parts of the world?

Yes, we should all be confined to the situation of our birth and never be able to do things that, you know, we actually choose.

YABU

LeighaJ · 10/07/2018 18:49

YABVVVU for not wanting Man Utd to dominate.

Amanduh · 10/07/2018 18:49

This would never, ever, ever work. And is ridiculous.

liverbird10 · 10/07/2018 18:49

Op, this is insane.

Katinkka · 10/07/2018 18:50

Aren’t hull in the premier league? They usually are.

Atthebottomofthesea · 10/07/2018 18:50

Cricket used to be a bit like that. Maybe your county or a certain % has to be home grown.

The money in football is beyond disgusting which is a different issue.

BrownTrowsers · 10/07/2018 18:50

Why is it insane though?

It's like saying "I'm English but would love to play for Brazil one day"

I feel similarly about the proportion of players from overseas in our teams. It leaves very little opportunity for home-grown talent to ‘make it’ - I speak as DM of an academy level player. Our local team has 4 players from the UK, and the rest bought in at eye watering sums from abroad.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 10/07/2018 18:52

How would that work exactly? Do they need to be born there? Go to school there? Be under 18 when their dad has to move to a new city for work?

Don’t think you’ve thought this through OP.

PinkHeart5914 · 10/07/2018 18:53

Why? How would you like to be told you couldn’t work anywhere but the city you were born in? What a dull life that would be

GameOfMinges · 10/07/2018 18:53

You do realise Manchester United now and historically have quite a lot of players from the local area, generally more than other big English clubs do? They really aren't the team to use here to make your point. Google is your friend.

Your proposal would also basically lead to London teams having several times more options than those in any other city, and people who aren't from a city (they do exist) not being able to play for anyone.

It's a ridiculous idea.

kaytee87 · 10/07/2018 18:54

Who decides where you're from though? Is it where you're born or where you live? How long do you have to live there?

ApolloniaC · 10/07/2018 18:54

This is hillarious. It's a business. It's a job. Part of our economy. And United made their fortune on home grown talent in the early 90s (scholes, nevilles, butt, giggs, Beckham etc all came up through United youth academy. Unless you're talking about the Emirati funded man city?

kaytee87 · 10/07/2018 18:55

And people that live in villages and small towns, who can they play for?

BrownTrowsers · 10/07/2018 18:56

It would have to say the place you were born on your birth certificate

OP posts:
kaytee87 · 10/07/2018 18:56

😂 well my brother was born on a British army base in Germany so who could he play for?

BrownTrowsers · 10/07/2018 18:56

Well ok, maybe so many miles from team so the villagers can join in

Why is it insane though?

It's like saying "I'm English but would love to play for Brazil one day"

You do realise that it would actually be possible for an English person to qualify to play for Brazil, or vice versa? People are able to play international football for countries they're not from and don't have a parent or grandparent from either, as long as they live there long enough. Qualification through residence requirements rather than place of birth. Because immigration is a thing.

So actually if you're young enough and good enough, and in particular if you haven't already represented any other country internationally, it actually is possible to be English and decide to play for Brazil instead. Well, assuming they'll have you, but then that would be true of any international team.

blackteasplease · 10/07/2018 18:57

Yes Man U was a weird example. A team that has always done well, had a great tradition of a youth team (particularly in the 60s and 90s when they really did well), never one of those "take over and spend" clubs.

If you'd said Man City or Chelsea foe example you'd have done better.

But I disagree generally.

BrownTrowsers · 10/07/2018 18:58

Kaytee, he'd have to play for Germany 😂

For those getting irate about this, it's not a serious proposal I'm putting forward to the FA! I've simply always wondered why they don't do it

OP posts:
kaytee87 · 10/07/2018 18:58

But he's not German and wouldn't be entitled to a German passport

juneybean · 10/07/2018 18:58

Yanbu Sunderland could do with the help of Pickford and Henderson Grin

GameOfMinges · 10/07/2018 18:58

In the nicest possible way OP, the reason they don't do it is because it's a really bad idea.

kaytee87 · 10/07/2018 18:59

I've simply always wondered why they don't do it

Because it's a really bad idea and logistically wouldn't work
