Parking- why wouldn't you use your own drive?

This is just an irritation at the moment, but I'm wondering if I'm missing something.

Neighbours have two drives, two spaces that they could use without blocking each other in.
They have small children, I would have thought it's easier/safer to get them out in their drive rather than in the road.
The cars aren't too big for the gate posts-they're quite wide.
I recently couldn't use my drive and it drove me crazy parking in the road.

There is a big tree outside which they park under and birds crap on their cars. The kerb is all uneven because of the tree roots and they back up to it.
There are no other cars on the road. The road is wide.

It's annoying me because it restricts my view when I'm backing out, they park right up to the entrance of my drive, so I have to do a big arc to get in, and even though I indicate, cars behind me can't figure out that I'm turning in a drive.
When they have visitors they park outside my house, so in turn my visitors are parking further down.
Is it just a quick getaway they're after?!!

YABVU for not including a diagram per MN unwritten law.

Icecreamandpineapple · 09/07/2018 16:18

Is their drive steep? reason I ask is because mine is and I can't get my car on without it banging the bottom of the car

Tomboytown · 09/07/2018 16:19

Dead flat

Got halfway through but can't go any further without a diagram.

Littlebelina · 09/07/2018 16:21

We don't use ours often but that is because it is not very wide and we'd struggle to use the car seats. However we park across the bottom of it so aren't using parking others could use if you know what I mean. Neighbours across the road do the same and I think it's due to people blocking them in or making access difficult when they have used the drive (access to ours is difficult if folks park in a particular way). Could it be they've been blocked in before and don't want to risk it?

MaxPepsi · 09/07/2018 16:21

My neighbours didn't use their drive because they were lazy, couldn't be bothered to open the gates.

This was even after they had their car crashed into on the street and their works van broken into.

Alexandrite · 09/07/2018 16:24

Maybe they've had people parking inconsiderately or blocking them in in the past. Maybe they don't like reversing onto the road or something?

BackforGood · 09/07/2018 16:26

Don't know. I'd LOVE a drive I could ft two cars on - then maybe I wouldn't have to keep paying out for repairs from all the damage done by drivers who just drive off. Angry

Mymouthgetsmeintrouble · 09/07/2018 16:32

Ask the people who live opposite me in a tiny grove , they have a garage and an off road parking space yet park outside the front of there house making it difficult to get on and off my drive , drives me mad

Tomboytown · 09/07/2018 16:34

See if this makes sense
Their gates are never closed.
I think it's lazier to want to be closer to the from door- that's me.
There's never any other cars on the road, everyone uses their driveways.

My parents live in a cul de sac which has limited road parking due to everyone having a driveway. The neighbours opposite have enough parking for about 6 cars, including large driveway, carport and garage.

They park their multiple cars on the road and their visitors use the road outside my parent’s house which means their visitors have to park up the road. I know they can park where they like but it’s fucking annoying!

SlartiAardvark · 09/07/2018 16:36

I hate other people's cars parked outside my house.

Don't mind my own though, go figure!! Wink

Racecardriver · 09/07/2018 16:38

Maybe they want the shade from the tree?

Tomboytown · 09/07/2018 16:38

My last house had parking permits, sometimes you had to park at the end of the road.
Loving the driveway- hence why I can't understand why they wouldn't use theirs

I really don't know.
Where I live there are people who have a garage plus a drive with enough space for at least 2 cars then they still park on the road!
I talking about expensive cars too. I really don't understand it.

Mari50 · 09/07/2018 16:46

My neighbours don’t use their drive and I figure it’s because they are a) lazy arses and b) shit drivers.
That their cars are dented to fuck all up the sides proves b) and that I have to listen to them shout at each other constantly because they can’t walk 10ft to the next room proves a)

madamginger · 09/07/2018 16:47

I have a garage and a drive big enough for 3 cars and I park on the road.
My kids play on our driveway and it’s narrow up the side of the house and although I can get the car on I can’t open the doors Hmm
The garage is full of crap and bikes and I’ve never parked in it.

Our street has loads of parking though and it’s not hard to park at all.

LookWhosHavingKittens · 09/07/2018 16:47

Have they once had the issue of someone blocking them in on their drives perhaps?

diddl · 09/07/2018 16:48

Couple down the road from us park on the road as the kids play in the drive.

"it restricts my view when I'm backing out"

Would driving out be better?

TSSDNCOP · 09/07/2018 16:50

Sorry Op this really annoys me. They are taxed so can park where they legally like. If you reversed onto your drive like you’re supposed to you’d have control when you drive off.

nervousnails · 09/07/2018 16:50

Because it is easier to get in and out of the house. Our NDN does this and we have a narrow road in front of our houses. His car was hit by some other van or lorry today and he is yet to notice the football sized dent on the car. Grin

Haberpop · 09/07/2018 16:51

I'd reverse on to your drive and drive off as I think the view is always better when pulling out of a parking space/driveway in a forward gear.

Hawkie · 09/07/2018 16:51

Do they use their drive for the children to play / scoot on?

flissfloss65 · 09/07/2018 16:53

Maybe they don’t like looking out at their cars from inside? Or they dislike backing into traffic as they leave?
