Habitat click and collect - can’t collect without passport!

Habitat - hereafter known in our house as Habitw*t - click and collect...

Went to Sainsbury’s to collect my order. Had received an email to say it was in, inputted order number, Sainsbury’s lady arrives with my item. All good.

And then the fun starts. She asks me for a DPD QR code. I don’t have a DPD QR code. And as I ordered with Habitat and was collecting from Sainsbury’s, nor was I expecting a DPD QR code... Apparently DPD are subcontracted to deliver to Sainsbury’s for Habitat. Without the QR code from DPD, I can’t have my item. Or - I can provide proof of address and photo ID and they might be able to make an exception... The fact that I have the original order number, copies of my order confirmation etc on my phone and can show them to the Sainsbury’s lady makes no difference. Obviously I’m trying to steal a large and not very easy to carry picture frame. Clearly this item would be top choice if I were a criminal mastermind. Or not... So I call Habitat. Helpful man at Habitat calls store for me. Still disallowed. And so ultimately I cancel my order and it’s been a huge waste of time for me and all three companies involved.

I mean - I could have driven all the way home again to find my passport and a council tax bill, but doesn’t that rather defeat the point of click and collect being convenient??? Good Lord, you couldn’t make the shit up!

Do AIBU to think this should be easier?

Surely you could use your driving license?

Tbh most retailers ask for some form of ID when collecting parcels. Habitat’s website specifically states that you need photo ID to collect

elQuintoConyo · 09/07/2018 14:55

Um... Use your driver's licence or, yes, drive home and get your passport.

ShatnersBassoon · 09/07/2018 14:56

Carry your driving license with you to avoid these hurdles. It doesn't have to be your passport.

NameChangeUni · 09/07/2018 14:58

Also it probably is more inconvenient for the retailer to send something out then have to have it returned - I’m sure they would rather you were able to collect it as expected. Their procedures are in place to both protect you and them from fraud. I’m sure if some dodgy relative/mate was able to access your emails and show that to them as proof to collect your stuff then you’d be annoyed. And I’m also sure that if someone fraudulently used your card to make the purchase in your name, you’d be annoyed that they would be able to collect it?

It sounds like it's sainsburys that the problem, not habitat.

SophSoph92 · 09/07/2018 15:03

This is all down to new GDPR rules; as far as I'm aware they are now legally required to ask for correct ID, otherwise they may be in breach.

runningkeenster · 09/07/2018 15:06

I'm not sure how collecting a picture frame is personal data, but yes it's clearly all to do with GDPR. If you have the confirmation on your phone or as a paper copy that should be enough.

SophSoph92 · 09/07/2018 15:07

It's about proving who you are...?

No license as just moved house. Agreed, I would normally have it but didn’t today as it’s been with the DVLA since last week. My point is, it’s clearly me! How else would I have had the order number to add to their machine, which triggered the goods being released to the Sainsbury’s lady? Plus a load of emails re order confirmation, confirmation that click and collect was available, a text to say it had been delivered to the store. The only thing I didn’t have was a QR code that Habitat’s courier, ie DPD, had failed to send me. If they’d done their job properly, I wouldn’t have been in this position. Ditto if someone at Sainsbury’s had used their common sense. I’ve also ordered loads of stuff from Argos to this store to collect and NEVER been asked for either a code or ID - so it’s an inconsistent policy at best, given they’re owned by the same company.
