Type 1 diabetes

Posting here for traffic and because I can't find health.

Dp has diabetes so we are familiar with the disease.

DD (18) is showing signs that things are not right.

Losing weight (she is quite slim anyway and eats a lot)
Thirsty, tired all the time etc

We have done the testing strips and it comes out pink not normal.

This morning she phoned the doctor for An emergency appointment.

Got one but then doctor phoned back to say no, a diagnosis for type 1 diabetes is not an emergency.

DD now has an appointment in 3 weeks.

She went to a local pharmacy and they directed her back to the doctors.

DPS blood sugar level machine was brand new a few months ago. Changed because his old one was obsolete and they no longer made the testing strips.

New machine testing strips are now also obsolete so because he only has had this machine a few months they are refusing to change it

Is there anywhere to test for blood sugars

I could make a complaint every time any of us go .

Totally unacceptable. When my brother was diagnosed at GPS he was blue lighted up to hospital!! If GP isn't willing to see you then take her to A&E! x

GlassSuppers · 09/07/2018 15:42

Disgusting.

Time to change GP OP!!

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 09/07/2018 15:54

What were the testing strips that turned pink? Was it a urine test for ketones? If she has ketones in her urine then it would be best if she went straight to A&E as she may get more unwell whilst waiting at the WIC, and they will redirect her to A&E when she is seen. Ketones in her urine can be a sign of developing diabetic ketoacidosis which needs urgent A&E treatment so I would strongly encourage her to go straight to A&E.

BlackWatchBelle · 09/07/2018 16:01

My God this is god smackingly scary. My son is type 1, I took him to the GP and within 10 mins we are off in an ambulance to the hospital and he got his diagnosis.

13 bg isn't too high but its out of range so she really does need to be taken seriously. Especially as her dad has it to! We did have 1 GP who didn't know the difference between tyoe 1 and 2. We walked out of thay appointment!

Takfujimoto · 09/07/2018 16:04

Don't send her somewhere alone!

She could collapse if she has Type1 and is ill with it undiagnosed.

She needs to go to A&E if her GP is refusing to see her today.

This is an emergency, take a photo of finger prick test and the dip (ph) stick with you.

13 is a high reading and she could be very ill.

I was blue lighted to hospital when I first presented after what I discovered later to be constant hypos and a very bad one at a gp appointment, but high BS is just as bad.

Please take her and refuse to leave if they fob you off.

Rogersnextdoublespartner · 09/07/2018 17:27

That is outrageous Op.
Is there a walk-in Centre she could go to? Failing that A&E.

Complain when DD is sorted.

jjwelcomd · 09/07/2018 17:53

Just to add - mum of T1 here and we nearly lost him to DKA.

As a previous poster said 13 is very high - the top end of normal is 6.9.

I'm glad she's going to the walk in, but if you don't have any luck - straight to A and E.

I'm sorry this is happening xx

Oliversmumsarmy · 09/07/2018 18:04

Yes she went to our local walk in centre.

Not too sure what happened blood test at walk in centre said 5.8.

We will test her again in the morning just to be on the safe side.

Glad for all the support have had a really shitty day.

Dp went to one of his cancer tests and they found more polyps.
Our vet stuffed up the feeding tube for our kitten so now I am having to get as many calories down her throat instead of tube feeding her so I don't think she is going to make it.
Then nurse at the vets apparently on her own volition reported me to the RSPCA because kitten is underweight. (Kitten has loads of health issues we were overcoming) and now is in a worse state.

Then I have been worrying all day about DD.

I will be glad when the day is over.

What a shitty day OP so sorry.

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 09/07/2018 18:30

What was the pink on the testing strip? Ketones? Something else?

If developing type 1 diabetes blood sugars can go up and down, having 5.8 at walk in centre and normal tomorrow doesn't rule out diabetes.

Was the reading of 13 reliable, eg done with your husband's machine? If so she still needs to have further testing, I'm surprised this hasn't been recommended.

Is there a GP you trust you can contact?

Oliversmumsarmy · 09/07/2018 23:07

Yes on DPS machine.

We will get her to test herself and just to keep an eye out for symptoms.

I have done tests occasionally and never been above 6.7.

My heart sank when we read 13.

I was told when I was in hospital after both dc that they would be protected until adulthood with my genetics. Can't remember the exact odds but DD would be less of a risk than ds.

And personally don't trust any GPs at my surgery.

Did she have clean hands when she finger pricked?
Your dh must have more than one glucose meter? We have about seven lying around? But you can monitor her blood sugar using his machine. Just change the lancet?

I'd keep doing random tests and when you do finally get her to GP ask for a hba1c.

But if you get another high reading take her straight to A&E.

JudeSutton · 11/07/2018 09:52

Hi - I ma hiping you have now gone to A&E - I am a mum of 2 type 1 kids, and also work for JDRF, the type 1 diabetes research charity. As an organisation we cannot give out medical advice, but as a mum of t1 kids, I know to recommend that you need to go to A&E. Hoping all is ok x

Oliversmumsarmy · 11/07/2018 22:31

We are going to be testing her blood sugars every few days. Just to keep an eye out.

OP posts:
Purplevicki · 11/07/2018 23:48

As someone with T1D, can I suggest that you test more often than every few days? I’d be testing before meals and 2 hrs after eating and then again at bedtime in order to establish any patterns/ gather evidence.

Also - is it worth phoning 111 if she gets other high readings? They can access emergency GP appointments at your surgery or out of hours appointments elsewhere.

Fingers crossed it isn’t T1 - it sucks!

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 12/07/2018 06:24

Jesus no
You can’t wait

Donthe self test and call back x

Oliversmumsarmy · 12/07/2018 12:32

Stopfuckingshoutingatme if that is about getting an appointment at the doctors. DD did ring back but was told no earlier appointments till the one she has in place in 3 weeks
