To be annoyed at people stealing fruit?

We have a fruit tree in our front garden. A lady that live behind me keeps pinching the fruit off the tree. She leans into our garden to pick the best ones too!
I don't know her, but I know she lives behind my house. What can I do to stop her, or can I stop her?

well maybe the trees grow in turkey and she's homesick. It might be the best bit of her day, by letting her gob stolen rotten fruit on the pavement you're doing a virtuous thing.

FrannyandZooey · 27/05/2007 14:36

How can you tell she is Turkish just from looking?

hoxtonchick · 27/05/2007 14:37

can't say i noticed the tree, but the fruit sounds yummy!

hoxtonchick · 27/05/2007 14:37

(and no, the thief isn't me in disguise )

kid · 27/05/2007 14:39

Because my children sometimes play out the back of our house and her son plays there too. He doesn't speak English just Turkish.

Was she in Turkish national costume? Definitely pining and homesick if so.

FrannyandZooey · 27/05/2007 14:40

Boco you know we are desperately trying to construct an exciting and entertaining story about this but I think it is just a mad old woman stealing fruit

I am giving it up as a bad job

SuGaRCoAteDPoiSOn · 27/05/2007 14:41

thank you!! never knew the english name for them.. my mum adores them and would eye your tree enviously if she saw it She has a fig tree in her garden and fights with the squirrels over them, lmfao

Get someone to make a sign in Turkish saying; "Please do not steal the fruit it is very rude"
Just reminds me of my scrumping days when i was 7 yrs old, we used to go into the farmer's orchard and pinch some plums.
One day, the farmer caught us and we got marched up to our parents who gave us a good spanking.
Never did it again, but the farmer's wife did give my parents a big bag of plums cause we said sorry.

I happened to be outside my house tonight as she came along with her son. It looks like she was getting him to climb up the tree to get more than we realised.
He came running along, went to jump up the tree and then saw me standing by the door and he really jumped!!!

Then she came along and was staring up at the tree, then she noticed me and scurried on past. The thing is, there are no plums left in the tree as we picked them all yesterday!

maybe you could put a big sign up saying PEACH

(it is bastard in turkish or something)

At least that's what they told me when I ordered a peach schnapps once

CristinaTheAstonishing · 04/06/2007 17:13

My DS eats blackberries off a bush overhanging someone else's garden. Is this really stealing? For freely you have received, freely you should give away.

wheresthevalium · 04/06/2007 17:16

I have giggled my way through this whole thread, thanks

bookwormmum · 04/06/2007 17:21

We used to pick apples from our next door neighbour's tree. I even used to climb the fence sometimes in order to reach the better ones. I was a lot younger then - I'd probably get stuck now.

Strictly speaking it's theft but I don't think that the police will be too sympathetic. At least she's getting her 5-a-day so she should be healthy .

OrmIrian · 04/06/2007 17:23

Perhaps now she's seen you looking she might leave them alone. I think it's more than a little cheeky to actually climb up and get them . The odd one or two is a different matter.

fillyjonk · 04/06/2007 17:30

hayir (oh that IS spelt wrong) in turkish means both "no" and "cucumber", depending on exact pronouncation and intonation

I think "cucumber" might additionally be some sort of innuendo

this caused me some embarassment on multiple occasions some years ago when i was teaching there.

or this might have been made up by my evil friend.

kid · 04/06/2007 17:36

I wasn't sure if I was being unreasonable to be annoyed at her. If it had just been the odd one or two, then fine. But she was taking loads!

There won't be anymore for her this year though! LOL
