To think that they should open at 8am?!

I like to go for a coffee or breakfast after work, the only cafe nearby is meant to be open at 8am but multiple times these past few weeks they've still been shut when I turn up around 8.15.

AIBU to think that either open on time, change your opening hours or put up a sign if it's a temporary thing?!

And AIBU in thinking that just because they may not be overly busy first thing in the morning, doesn't mean they should turn up when they want, ignoring the small handful who do (attempt to) go there?

I shouldn't care about this, but I do. I want to know what they say now.

I'm gripped. Grin

Definitely email them OP. Could well be that the owners don’t realise this is happening.
A friend of mine owns a restaurant and recently I ate there with friends. We had a fab meal, great service, and would have ordered another bottle of wine, and a few g&ts, as I think would the table of 8 near us. But we got the distinct impression that it was time to go, so left.
I spoke to my friend about it after, saying it might be an idea to ask if people wanted another drink before the bill, as we would have spent quite a bit more. Friend was furious with staff, as this is supposed to happen apparently, but the senior staff member had sneaked off early and the younger ones wanted to head out themselves so couldn’t wait for us to go. And my friend misses out on money in the till when margins are tight, and staff are paid until much later!
It’s hard for businesses to make a go of it.

Slarty go back to sleep.

GameOfMinges · 09/07/2018 09:19

Seems daft. They're not obligated to open at 8 of course, and if there isn't enough custom to justify it then fair enough, but saying they'll be open at a certain time then not being seems the worst of both worlds.

pinkgirl1234 · 09/07/2018 09:21

Slarty go back to sleep.

Or have a cup of coffee. Grin

Slartybartfast · 09/07/2018 09:22

true, unfortunately my alarm went off when it shouldn't, so i have a lack of sleep.
Will have a second coffee Grin

Time of the month, Slarty?

Hoppinggreen · 09/07/2018 09:26

A group of us recently went out for a meal to a pub, food was served until 9 and the table was booked for 7.30.
We had a nice meal and asked for desserts but were told by the her waiting staff that as it was 8.50 we couldn’t have any, we had actually been waiting since 8.30 when our plates were cleared to order dessert.
As we we’re leaving the manager came over and asked if everything was ok, we said yes it was thank you
She said she was surprised we hadn’t ordered desserts as we had actually had a conversation with her about it when we ordered our mains
Eg “ I will have something light because I really fancy the jam roll poly” or similar
Cue lots of shouting in the kitchen as the waitress had told her we didn’t want desserts so she could finish early and go home. We got free desserts

9amTrain · 09/07/2018 09:26

@Slartybartfast the forum isn't restricted to serious problems and I didn't claim that it was anything other than a trivial problem. Fuck off with your patronising attitude yeah?

Slarty obviously missed their coffee this morning too.

9amTrain · 09/07/2018 09:30

@Hoppinggreen that's shocking of the waitress! But you got free desserts so that's good. Grin

Slartybartfast · 09/07/2018 09:50

😂

FatBarry · 09/07/2018 09:51

I wonder if the employee who is meant to open up is persistently late.

Beamur · 09/07/2018 09:51

I had this happen in Crewe last year (I don't live in Crewe).
Had DSC's in tow from visiting IL's. Easiest way for them to get home (they are adults and not living with us) was by train. Crewe was best location, so we took them to Crewe, planned to have lunch.
First place we went to refused service because although their website said they were open for another hour they had stopped taking orders 5 minutes earlier. We weren't impressed .
Found a cafe, 45 mins until closing. Told we could have a takeaway sandwich but not sit down. A few people came after us, they were turned away completely.
We asked why we couldn't sit down to be told that although the sign said 4, they closed at 3.30 to close up and clean because they were only paid until 4. The staff were not the owners.

Beamur · 09/07/2018 09:52

I'm in no hurry to go back to Crewe.

9amTrain · 09/07/2018 23:06

They just replied that the opening hours are from 5pm.

No they're not. Those are the takeaway delivery times. The cafe opening times are from 8, and I went back there shortly after I posted here (and got the email when I came home)

Can't be arsed to go back to them, I'll just avoid it unless it's middle of the day!

Sounds like really poor customer service not opening on time and then lying about what the times even are. Vote with your feet if there's another alternative

HMC2000 · 10/07/2018 08:41

I'd reply to suggest they change the sign on the door then, as it must be out of date.

AveABanana · 10/07/2018 09:38

Email them back a photo of the opening times on the door Grin
