I tried boxed wine about 20 years ago, and thought that I had to pierce a hole in the side, which I did, with a knife. It's a bag of wine, and I slashed the side open.

Bloody idiot.

Passmethecrisps · 08/07/2018 23:34

It lulls you into a falls sense of security lemony.

Starts off all powerful gushing and then before you know it it’s starting to dribble.

Tara12 · 08/07/2018 23:35

In boxed vino there is also veritas. Enjoy!

TheCraicDealer · 08/07/2018 23:35

If it's the "box" part that puts you off Marksies do a vaaary nice Capri-Sun style bag thing. It's proper nice, well worth it.

pyramidbutterflyfish · 08/07/2018 23:37

“practically all bottled wine arrives in the UK in giant bags”

That’s really interesting, I had no idea. I am not sure if it’s really “practically all”, but I am going to check my bottles from now on. Anyhow, Concha y Toro who are fine by me to it, as do The Wine Society, so I won’t complain too much!

schoty77 · 08/07/2018 23:38

Excuse me! I have very fond memories of being young and sitting in the local park with my crew, drinking from a goon sack. I don't think it's a sad old lady thing to drink in the slightest.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 08/07/2018 23:40

I love a box of wine. All wine arrives in boxes and is bottled in the uk

MorningsEleven · 08/07/2018 23:44

My brother in law used to work in a goon sack factory.

CardinalSin · 08/07/2018 23:49

There's a difference between boxed wine from Asda and boxed wine from Carrefour.

Fabricwitch · 09/07/2018 00:07

They used to do cartons of wine in Tesco when I was a student. I can't remember the price, but the bottle wine we used to get was only €3 so it must have been less than that. We only tried it once Envy (puking) before going back to the bottles.
I wouldn't risk the boxes unless it was the same wine I would be drinking otherwise.

Maverick101 · 09/07/2018 00:10

YABVU -- because you can use it to make champagne Grin

Jasperoonicle · 09/07/2018 00:15

Been using the sodastream for that exact purpose for years! Not great with red though I have to admit. I did used to drink sparkling burgundy when living abroad but it is totally different. The white is great though for quick and cheap fizz :D

avamiah · 09/07/2018 00:21

I don’t buy it myself as it comes in big boxes doesn’t it?
But if I was offered a glass at a friends house I would happily drink it.
I just buy wine by the bottle.

JuniperBeer · 09/07/2018 00:42

Yes practically all wine prices under £7 comes in massive IBC’s. Like big plastic cubes in metal cages. Essentially like plastic milk cartons. Except they’re lined with a bag so they can be reused.
It’s expensive to ship glass. So they don’t do it. All your Jacobs creek and cheapo wine will be bottled in the UK or EU.

It’s not just new world wine now, it’s old world too. Lots of Europeam wine is available on tap now, and in BIB.
I cba to find it now but even Harvey nice and selfridges sell box wine. It’s easier to stack, more efficient to transport. Lower carbon footprint and more sustainable packaging. It’s also a lot cheaper to package!

JaneJeffer · 09/07/2018 00:45

consider it Cardboardeaux instead. Grin

avamiah · 09/07/2018 00:50

JuniperBeer,
Yes I agree and I’m actually going to purchase a box/carton this weekend from Waitrose.

JuniperBeer · 09/07/2018 12:33

@avamiah if you can stretch to the ‘when in rome’ Range it’s worth it!

PinkHeart5914 · 09/07/2018 12:38

I haven’t had boxed wine since a festival when I was about 19, tbh it still haunts me now the nasty taste of that cheap wine.

These days it’s very nice bottled wine becuase frankly I am bloody worth it!

Racecardriver · 09/07/2018 12:42

Half the pint in buyi g decent wine is that it is too expensive to over drink.
