Aibu to have felt pissed off at the people (they were mainly men) not clapping at ds’s school prize giving?

It was an hour of almost solid applauding for each boy who’d won a prize, and it was boring and annoying, but basically only polite to clap for each boy.

It may be a cultural thing as I think a fair few parents are not British, but I resented them just sitting there doing nothing while the rest of us slogged it out.

Aibu?

Whilst I get what you’re saying, YABU - clapping gets tiring

Stoveding · 08/07/2018 19:55

It was quite tiring, but ruse to not even try once.

You said yourself it was an hour of solid applauding.

Stoveding · 08/07/2018 19:57

Bit of an exaggeration. But a lot of ppl didn’t clap AT ALL

The school should have awarded the prizes and certificates in groups (e.g. year groups) and then asked parents to applaud all recipients in that group.

Applauding after each child is not ideal because:

  • Everyone's hands get tired
  • The popular children (or children with more guests) get louder applause.
  • The headteacher (or whoever is awarding) has to wait for each child's applause to fade away before saying the next child's name, which adds extra time to the ceremony.

They were in little groups of 4

I agree - irritates me totally!

Parkrun this morning - so many parents cheering on their kids only and ignoring other kids as they slogged past.

HushabyeMountainGoat · 08/07/2018 20:03

I agree with you in a sense but i also think that the amount of clapping required needs to be managed. Its really annoying having to clap for ages

rosesandflowers1 · 08/07/2018 20:05

At DD's school they always say to reserve applause until the end of each section.

Things go smoother and this isn't a problem! At DS' we clap for individual children but everyone grins and bears it.

It is a bit rude.

Kitkatonthemat · 08/07/2018 20:07

Totally with you OP.

I don't really care how tired your hands are (obviously unless there is some physical reason / illness) or where you are from - it's just common decency to recognise each child.

Our town has just celebrated Armed Forces day, I was so ashamed only half the crowd clapped for the veterans and cadets parade. The past and the future and they could barely put their pint glasses down.
