I'm hoping you wonderful people will have some ideas!

So my washing machine needs cleaning. The seal is going black and it's starting to smell foisty.

From what I understand it's due to a build up of soap etc because we generally wash at lower temperatures these days.

All the advice says to run the machine empty at 90°c at least.

My shopping Aquarius doesn't appear to have hot wash more than 60°c. Will this be hot enough? Am I missing a special clean setting?

Does it have a white cotton wash setting on it? That'll probably be 90.

The other option is something like this stuff which should clean it up.

DrDougieHowserMD · 08/07/2018 14:49

Mine has an "auto clean" wash. I don't know how hot it gets but it recommends this every 50 or so washes. I also chuck some bleach in there during it. Great for nasty smells and black gunk/mouldy spots.

As op said, white cotton wash should be 90 I think.

DrDougieHowserMD · 08/07/2018 14:50

**as PP said.

I love cleaning my washing machine with zoflora (fresh linen scent) on a hot wash make sure you pull out the detergent drawer and give that a good scrub first

VelociraptorRex · 08/07/2018 14:55

Probably best to avoid putting bleach in it, it rots the seals. Try a hot wash (as a PP said a cottons/White wash is usually 90 degrees) with some Milton in it. I'm sure there's something to do with putting vinegar in, but I can't remember what it is (and your washing would probably smell like fish and chips afterwards Confused) or most supermarkets sell own brand or Dr Beckman washing machine cleaner stuff. Make sure you clean the door seal and the detergent drawer as well though, they get absolutely minging in our house!

HarrietSchulenberg · 08/07/2018 14:57

If you have any baking soda, use that instead of buying separate cleaners. Half a small cup, a capful of bleach/Zoflora/disinfectant of your choice, and the hottest temp your machine will do.
You've reminded me I need to mine 😀.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 08/07/2018 14:57

You don't have to do anything special for the door boot. You can use ordinary soap or, if the mould doesn't shift, any of the mildew removers - wipe on and wipe it off again. Then the trick to stop it coming back is LEAVE THE DOOR AJAR! And don't believe anyone who tells you it is something more tricksy than that.

Don't bother with calgon or specific products, cheap soda crystals and a towel wash on the hottest setting will sort out any gunk in the pipes, drum etc, re-wash the towels if anyone has sensitive skin.

That's it. Honest! - daughter of a washing machhine engineer who can actually change a door boot without struggling Smile

Using vinegar in a wash doesn't leave it smelling like fish and chips. Ideally you should use white vinegar but any will do.

Thanks all!

Found the manual! Auto clean will be going on shortly!!
