On tutor time on Friday the kids and their teacher ( a footy fan!) were chatting about the match Saturday and some of the kids went out singing.

Deputy head screamed at them and put them on heads detention Hmm

Aibu to think this is ridiculous

How very draconian.

my2bundles · 08/07/2018 09:28

If they have detention then they must be in high school. If this happened still snide the school building then I agree wth the deputy head, they are old enough to have self control, wait until they are outside so they don't disturb other classes.

PurpleDaisies · 08/07/2018 09:30

If they were walking around the school singing loudly, that would disturb other lessons going on. A warning to keep it to break times or face a detention wouldn’t have been out of order.

msundermined · 08/07/2018 09:30

They weren’t, it was the bell for the end of the day!

Let me guess....this is your dcs version of events Grin

msundermined · 08/07/2018 09:34

Not quite.

IT doesn't matter what time f the day it us. They did something that warranted a detention. At that time of day lessons will still be going n and teachers still explaining homework etc. Help your child understand why this was wrong then lesson learnt. Was it really to much to ask for them to wait until they where outside at high school age? Blimey the majority of primary school kids understand thus rule.

Strongmummy · 08/07/2018 09:42

I’d be a bit 🙄 but if they’re the rules , they’re the rules

9amTrain · 08/07/2018 09:54

The OP clearly says it was the end of day. Lessons will not be going on.

donquixotedelamancha · 08/07/2018 09:57

some of the kids went out singing

A gaggle of teenaged lads bellowing a football chant is incredibly loud in a confined space. Any school that would allow this on a corridor is a failure.

Deputy head screamed

So he shouted at them? How else do you expect him to be heard?

I really wish people like OP would just home school their kids.

my2bundles · 08/07/2018 09:57

It's a high school. Not everything stops as soon as the bell goes. It's obviously a rule otherwise they wouldn't have got detention. Is it really that difficult to wait untill the are outside at thus age?

RideSallyRide76 · 08/07/2018 09:59

Were you there op? Sounds as if there could be another side to it. If not then the deputy head was a bit harsh and could have warned them first. The footie fan form teacher should have had them under a bit more control though, sounds like he or she got a bit too matey and the kids just charged out rather than leaving quietly as they were supposed to?

msundermined · 08/07/2018 09:59

its obviously a rule

Nowhere does it say students are not allowed to sing.

OP posts:
msundermined · 08/07/2018 10:00

Yes that is exactly what happened although they didn’t charge out.

rosesandflowers1 · 08/07/2018 10:30

Uh, I imagine loud singing would be disapproved of in any high school. The bell rang? FFS. Some lessons will probably be going on, not to mention study sessions and clubs.

Maybe the Deputy Head doesn't want children in the schools uniform aligning themselves with the drunken hoodlums "singing" all hours of the day.

Lizzie48 · 08/07/2018 11:39

It sounds like a lack of control on the part of the class teacher. He should have instructed them to keep the volume down until they were outside. A detention sounds a little harsh on the face of it, the Deputy Head could have given them a warning rather than immediately punishing them with a detention.

But it's not something to moan about on Mumsnet. The school are in loco parentis and it's up to them how they deal with issues of discipline. A detention is hardly going to do long-term damage. Hmm

Snipples · 08/07/2018 19:04

If they were singing "football's coming home" then I'm totally with the deputy head tbh!

Wolfiefan · 08/07/2018 19:07

Or Vindaloo. If they sang that they should be hung, drawn and quartered. Grin
Quietly singing? Way over the top.
At the top of their voices? Shouting and generally behaving like football hooligans? Well deserved.

Birdsgottafly · 08/07/2018 19:10

""its obviously a rule""
""Nowhere does it say students are not allowed to sing.""

Every school has rules about conduct, in all parts of the school and also conduct outside of school, when leaving and wearing the uniform.

You seem determined to prove that your Son is in the right. Make an appointment to see the Deputy Head and have it out in school. The Teacher who started it, should have known better.
