to not understand why people shout at their TVs

One of me neighbours is almost hysterical right now. "GO ON, GO ONNNNN" "YESSSSSSSS" "COME ON LAD."

I don't get it. The players can't hear them. It's pathetic.

pr. England just scored. He now sounds like he's giving birth.

I've just got back from the pub where the entire pub shouted at the tv - England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 have done well to get here and we're allowed to get a bit excited about it. It's our first semi-final in 28 years! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Sparklesocks · 07/07/2018 17:23

catharsis

Glumglowworm · 07/07/2018 17:23

It’s not just sport. People shout at other things on tv as well

I don’t shout but I do insult people on tv sometimes. Yes I know they can’t hear me but it makes me feel better.

SerenDippitty · 07/07/2018 17:25

OP I am Welsh. Count yourself lucky you don’t live next door to me, the 6 Nations is every year.

whydoyouneed2know · 07/07/2018 17:27

I don't shout at the TV, but I do rant out loud when people are being idiots when playing mmorpgs, and laugh /cry when reading a particularly emotional book - it's usually a sign of my degree of interest/involvement - the more invested I feel, the more likely there will be some sort of vocalisation.

InterstellarSleepingElla · 07/07/2018 17:31

I'm not really a football fan normally but even I have been yelling at the screen today! As has the toddler when she got over her initial shock of Mummy yelling at the screen! She didn't know what she was shouting at but kept shouting "Yes! Come on!" 😂😂😂

IsItThatTimeAlready131 · 07/07/2018 17:32

I have had many years of having to hear DH argue with people's points of view, pick holes in plot lines etc, respond to things (questions etc.), react to sport, with him talking at the (people on the) television. I eventually kept telling him 'they can't hear you'.

Now he tells me all the things he would have told the television and interrupts my MN time perusing of the news sites, expecting responses. Maybe it would have made my life easier if I had just left him to talk to the television inarticulate objects.

Kingkiller · 07/07/2018 17:34

YABU. It is normal for people to get excited about things. They don't think the players can hear them. People do this with other sports or exciting things, not just football. There are an awful lot of "AIBU to not understand why people are passionate about things I don't like?" threads at the moment. They show a lamentable lack of intelligence, imagination and empathy imo.

InterstellarSleepingElla · 07/07/2018 17:34

@MrsJayy a bawbag? 😂

Lana1234 · 07/07/2018 17:35

I shouted at the first goal and jumped up and it made 10mo DS jump and cry and I felt awful haha. Second goal gave it a silent but enthusiastic “yes” and a mini first pump. It’s just adrenaline!

UrgentScurryfunge · 07/07/2018 17:41

I did whisper mantras to England through the penalty shoot out (E striker) score, score, score (C striker) miss, miss, miss, (E goalie) save, save, save.
It obviously worked Wink

Butternutsqoosh · 07/07/2018 17:41

I've got a sore throat and during the last game I got texts from my dd's to say how loud I was and they were trying to sleep 🙄 making them watch the semi final 😁

ChristmasFluff · 07/07/2018 18:45

I shout at the TV all the time - not about footie, but Versailles had me screaming then whooping last week when my favourite character looked like he'd been killed, then wasn't.

My son is a teenager - I only have the TV, radio and my cats to talk to! My TV is my Wilson

glintandglide · 07/07/2018 18:45

Passion!

PitterPatterOfBigFeet · 07/07/2018 18:49

They're clearly not shouting at their TV thinking it can hear them they''re just shouting in excitement. I don't usually even watch the football but it's not that difficult to understand getting excited by it.

AnastasiaVonBeaverhausen · 07/07/2018 18:50

I think football generally is a bunch of silly boys in PJs chasing a bag of wind around a field, and even I squawking at the telly this afternoon! It was quite exciting.
I am a telly shouter in general though. In a horror if someone is going somewhere they shouldn't, or there's an injustice being carried out. I get rather carried away.

SpectacularAardvark · 07/07/2018 18:51

Thank you! I've always said this, it's weird and pointless. So glad DH has gone out for the football, I can't stand the noise.
Call me a fun sponge all you like, I'm enjoying the peace.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 07/07/2018 18:52

Ha ha I do this when watching Walking Dead - “RUNNNNN OMG WHY ARE YOU NOT RUNNING!!” “ARRRGHH NOoooo!!” and hiding behind my DD’s cuddly dolphin toy Grin

Omgineedanamechange · 07/07/2018 18:52

It’s called enjoying yourself. You should try it sometime.

ReservoirDogs · 07/07/2018 18:54

Yes we get it - there are a number of people on MN who don't like football. There are also a number of people on MN who don't like a gazillion threads on here telling us they don't.

We had 6 of DS's friends round tomwatxh and we all shouted at the TV, showed passion and had fun. Each to their own!

Oddcat · 07/07/2018 18:54

I'm always talking to the tv, not just when the football is on either, I watched it on my own and shouted ! I'm watching the tennis now and the odd 'yesssss' escapes my lips.

ChipsAndKetchup · 07/07/2018 18:56

People do it all the time. Quiz shows. Sports. Anything.

You sound grumpy.

ChristmasFluff · 07/07/2018 19:04

OMG, @thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter, Walking Dead is PRIME telly-shouting material! I even do it when my sister is with me! Why are these people so unafraid of zombies in a world full of zombies??!!

NotAsGreenAsCabbageLooking · 07/07/2018 19:05

I talk to the people on bake off quite a lot.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 07/07/2018 19:07

DH does it because he's an ex-semi-pro and was captain. Old habits die hard.
