Basically, Person A goes to Person B's house when they are in the middle of decorating their house and moving stuff about into the loft and garage etc.

Person B needs to get into the loft and says they are going to use a small step ladder to help lift them in.

Person A says 'hey, you can borrow my loft ladder, I have had it 30 years, it's a really good one, and it goes right into the loft.'

Person B says 'it's OK, I will cope, I can just swing myself in, and my wife can pass the stuff up to me.'

Person A says 'nah don't be daft, I will bring it around after....'

Person B says 'erm OK then, ta...'

A month later Person A needs to get into their loft, and asks Person B for their loft ladder back. Person B said they thought they had it back, and they are pretty sure it's not in their house.

A few weeks later, despite Person A and Person B mooching around Person B's house and garage and shed a few times, the ladder is gone. Person A is furious as the loft ladder is 30 years old and is very valuable to him. A new equivalent would cost around £130-£150.

Person B has loads of people in and out - 3 teen sons (one aged 19,) and loads of young men regularly go in and out. They have also had friends and family around a number of times, so maybe someone took it, nobody knows, but it's gone.

Should Person B buy a new loft ladder? Or should they not, because Person A insisted Person B borrows the loft ladder, when they didn't even ask to borrow it???

In other words, does Person A need to suck it up and accept it's lost?

Also, surely if this thing had been so precious to them, they should not have lent it to someone?

Thank you. Would appreciate advice on this, thank you. Smile

Person B has to buy a new one. It’s annoying when they didn’t want it in the first place but tough luck.

Thanks for your response.

Would appreciate more people responding with their views. Thanks so much Smile

Person B needs to buy a new ladder.

SoapOnARoap · 07/07/2018 13:22

Person B buys a new ladder. No brainer

BlackWatchBelle · 07/07/2018 13:22

Insistance or not, it was still a borrowed iten that should have been looked after and its a bit big to have got lost so its been taken. It should be paid for. Worrying that person B can't track their belongings

DelphiniumBlue · 07/07/2018 13:23

Yes personB should replace it, unless they are positive they gave it back. Sounds as if they're not sure if it was returned?

hoopdeloop · 07/07/2018 13:24

Person b needs to buy a new ladder. If they didn’t want to use it, they should have returned it very quickly rather than keep it in their garage

jigglepiggle · 07/07/2018 13:24

Person B needs to replace it.

incogKNEEto · 07/07/2018 13:26

Person B needs to replace the ladder.

Annechristmas · 07/07/2018 13:27

Sorry op but you need to replace it. Worrying that people can take stuff from your house without you being aware of it though.

Cadencia · 07/07/2018 13:29

We don't know if OP is A or B! Which are you OP?

Singlenotsingle · 07/07/2018 13:31

I suppose legally person B is responsible for taking care of the ladder once he has allowed it to be brought into his house. However, what is the actual value of the ladder? It's old and second hand. Why should person A benefit by being given a brand new ladder to replace his crappy old one?

MatildaTheCat · 07/07/2018 13:33

How annoying but yes, person B has lost the leader so needs to replace it and quickly.

Excited0803 · 07/07/2018 13:33

Has anybody double-checked it isn't in the garage at Person A's house? I've never heard of ladder stealing, though anything's possible. It also seems like the sort of thing that's a right faff to move between houses, so it's weird that it was brought at all. Anyway, if person B thinks they didn't return out then they need to buy a me one. You can get loft ladders for about £50, shop around!

Excited0803 · 07/07/2018 13:34

*it not out
**new not me

Damn auto incorrect

LongSummerDays · 07/07/2018 13:34

Why did A insist that B borrowed it?

KittyHawke80 · 07/07/2018 13:35

How do you lose a fucking loft ladder? And how, when only a few weeks have passed, can you not be certain whether or not you’ve given it back?

WeAllHaveWings · 07/07/2018 13:37

if person B cant remember if he returned it and person A doesn't have it person B needs to replace the ladder.

op must be person A who has cf friend person B. Nobody would post this if they were person B.

Singlenotsingle · 07/07/2018 13:38

Maybe Person A planned this right from the beginning? His cunning plan to get a new ladder? Grin

minniemummy0 · 07/07/2018 13:39

Person A is a muppet. Doesn’t have the balls to say “no, really, I don’t need to borrow it, please don’t bring it round.” Then doesn’t have the capacity to remember whether they returned it (very worrying!), and doesn’t have enough control over their teenagers that unknown young men could have taken a flipping LOFT LADDER from their house without realising it?! What are they on??? They need to replace the ladder and get some control over their house and children.

Mammyloveswine · 07/07/2018 13:39

Am I only the one who is wondering how on earth a loft ladder can go missing????

minniemummy0 · 07/07/2018 13:40

Also, personally I think almost everything was better made 30 years ago so it’s quite possible a well-looked after 30 year old ladder genuinely could be a treasured item.

category12 · 07/07/2018 13:42

B buys them a new ladder.
