Situation: I work a long shift on a Friday 4-1.30am. X comes in at 7.30pm to do a 12hr shift.

When a colleague (Y) leaves at 11-45pm, X is on the rota to take over from them. Except X doesn’t. I take over every week. X has a break 30/40 mins after Y leaves and comes back when it’s time for me to leave.

Yesterday I asked X to take over until his break as I’d had a busy shift and wanted to catch up on my training paperwork and X flat out refused and says he doesn’t follow the rota, and that the rota has to be changed as it clashes with his break. He was arrogant and rude.

I had to cover again. I’ve emailed my supervisor but want to know whether people think I’m wrong or right.

If X is on the rota then X should be doing the job.

NeedMoreSleepOrSugar · 07/07/2018 08:52

If x is on the rota, just stop doing his work and concentrate on yours. If the rota needs changed, then that's for your supervisor to do, not x, or you for that matter. If the shit his the fan because xs Ariel isn't being done, that's on x, not you

Redhotsun · 07/07/2018 08:52

Exactly. I told him I’ve never questioned what’s on the rota and do the job. He’s been happy to sit back and let me do the work until I asked him to cover first time yesterday. He got loud and patronising telling me he works 37.5hrs and I don’t need to tell him about the job.

If the shit hits the fan because Xs work isn't being done* (why oh why can't we have an edit button)

SoddingUnicorns · 07/07/2018 08:54

Clearly you do need to tell him about the job if he isn’t doing it.

I’ve worked with twats like him before, only do the bare minimum and take the piss until they’re caught.

Angie169 · 07/07/2018 08:55

Do you have set break times ? If you do and he was having his break at the right time and I don't think there's a lot you can do about it unless you can get your supervisor to change the rota break times however if you don't have set times then yes x should have been working
Also if you are doing training so can't do your normal job that should be factored into the rota too .

DevilsDoorbell · 07/07/2018 08:57

Stop doing x work for him. And definitely report to the supervisor

X is a twat!

RhubarbRhubarbRhubarbRhubarb · 07/07/2018 08:59

Yanbu at all. Of course X should be working according to the rota. And if he doesn’t like the rota he should be taking it up with management, not leaving it for you to do.

Is it a hospitality job? I used to work in hospitality and there were rarely any breaks covered. I frequently worked an eight hour shift with no cover, even for a loo break. Fuckers.

Angie169 · 07/07/2018 08:59

You need to correct him about the fact that he works for 37.5 hours, he may be AT work for 37.5 hours but isn't working for that length of time if he skiving for 40 minutes everyday

Redhotsun · 07/07/2018 09:00

No there are no set break times. He usually goes on break 20-40 (sometimes longer) after Y leaves. That’s the time I cover and then his break on top of it.

OP posts:
RhubarbRhubarbRhubarbRhubarb · 07/07/2018 09:00

Oh double breaks?! That’s absolutely taking the piss.

Redhotsun · 07/07/2018 09:02

It’s not hospitality, it’s a 24/7 service in a hospital lab.

I’m speaking to my supervisor in the morning and told her in email exactly that he should be bringing up any rota clashes with her and not disrespecting his colleagues.

Ive just remembered, that When I worked a night shift on the Friday night, I started at 11pm and he used to go on break at 11.30pm or 11.45pm. When I changed my hours, suddenly his break time changed to further on. It doesn’t make sense what he’s saying because his break time is covered by me. I’m really pissed off now.

Me again, just asking for advice.

So I should be meeting my supervisor tomorrow to discuss what happened. I know I’m not in the wrong, as everyone has agreed in this thread and in RL.

I know he’s emailed aswell saying how the rota is unfair as it’s his break time (its not, or it’s part of it if he decides to go early). I’m not sure what the supervisor will decide to make things “fair” for him, but I refuse to cover his hour long breaks or take over after Y leaves. There is one other person working at that time who could do it, but, actually, it’s HIS job as he’s doing the night shift. Every person who works the night shift takes over at this time, so why should he get special treatment?

Will I sound like a lazy cow if I mention these things?

OP posts:
Wishiwasonholiday1 · 08/07/2018 21:18

You won't seem lazy at all. Your supervisor needs to know all the facts, he's clearly trying to get extra breaks and is not being fair to you.
Good luck tomorrow.

RhubarbRhubarbRhubarbRhubarb · 08/07/2018 21:27

Completely agree with @wish. He isn’t looking for fair, he’s looking for what’s fair, (one break, like everyone else), plus an extra one. He is a CF and if I was the supervisor I’d want to know this.

tinyme77 · 08/07/2018 21:39

Just stick to the facts when you talk to your supervisor.

RhubarbRhubarbRhubarbRhubarb · 08/07/2018 21:44

Also agree with @tiny. Aren’t I agreeable this evening Grin? Keep a cool head op. You are well within your rights not to want to cover someone else’s work while they have an extra 30-40 minute break. You are not at all lazy not to want to do this. The fact you’ve been doing it to date shows you are far from lazy and care about your work.

Redhotsun · 08/07/2018 22:20

Thanks everyone, I’ll try not to get emotional (even though I’m still angry at the way he dismissed me and made patronising comments). I also have a witness (Y) who heard X say he doesn’t follow the rota and that he doesn’t need to do what the rota says. I’m just worried because he’s been there a long time the supervisor will try to appease him in some way by making me do the take over.
