45 minutes a meal is too long for a toddler?

Dd, nearly 2, takes 45 minutes to eat her meals! AIBU to think this it too long? She starts slow, then eats more at the end, but, it's a LOOOONG time to be in a highchair?

Is this normal?

I gave up on the high chair a while back. At first we let him get down and come back to eat more later but now I try and keep him at the table. Once he gets down I take his food away (after lots of “ok I’m taking it” warnings and him coming back). If he needs more food he’ll get a chance to eat again later.

She's too little to reach the (stupidly high) table! But we all try to sit around it when possible (usually only dinner) and stay with her...

Not too long at all! Not everyone can or wants to bolt their food down in 20 mins!

She's exploring her tastes and appetite give her the time and space to do so.

My children take anywhere between 30 and 60 mins for a meal. I don’t rush them although it is really annoying when I want to be leaving the house at a certain time so have to incorporate a long meal time in.

Glad it's normal!!!

V normal for us

NoProbLlama78 · 06/07/2018 22:15

Its normal, mine can be like this.
Amazon have booster cushions for dining chairs that strap on as an alternative to the high chair.

My dd will take 45 minutes to eat a bowl of cereal! I'm from a family of slow eaters with long meals. Dp's family are done and dusted with a full meal plus seconds in 10 minutes.

I work with two year olds. Some are just very slow eaters. I have a couple in my toddler room that eat just as your daughter does. It is completely normal. Just as with some adults, some children prefer to take their time and savour their food. Is she your first? If so, you will probably find out soon that nothing stays the same for long, she might be wolfing it down in six months and you'll wish she would slow down. From my experience, both professionally and as a parent is that early childhood is basically moving from one phase to the next.

I wish my 2 year old would eat literally anything I have him other than bloody fruit.

Not only is it normal, but I think it's quite important not to push her to eat quickly. One of the things we're always being told as adults is that we need to take time to appreciate our food, and eat slower, so that we feel we've enjoyed the food, or we risk over eating and not noticing the feeling of being full.

Absolutly normal, and not the longest op.

Myotherusernameisbest · 06/07/2018 23:38

Completely normal, fear not.
