To be annoyed about this job advert

I work in a team of senior healthcare professionals. The role is quite diverse working in several different areas and we have all had to go back to uni to gain higher level qualifications. Our manager has recently told us that she will be handing over the management responsiblity to one of the team. We were told that we could all apply but when looking at the job description, it has been written to suit one person who is quite new to the team and is yet to complete any of the required academic work. She has stated on many occasions that she has not interest in one of the main aspects of the job and has not been placed to work in this area. The new job completely omits this area of work. She has also been relieved of the more mundane areas of work which are left to left to the rest of us to pick up and spends most of her time doing jobs for the boss in her office.
The really annoying part of this is that the new manager will instantly jump 2 pay bands giving a pay rise of about 10k and meaning she will be in charge of people who are better qualified and with more experience. The job will not be advertised outside of our team.
I know this probably sounds like sour grapes but it just seems like nepotism.

Sounds like this was their intention when they hired her.
I would be unimpressed.

Well, it may be cronyism, but it’s not nepotism. I’d be pissed off in your position, too: sounds like the deck is well and truly weighted in her favour. I’d challenge your manager.

But surely you, and your other colleagues, can demonstrate all those competencies AND more? So there's nothing to stop you applying.

Speak to this manager - ask whether there is a grievance procedure you could use. If you have to go to grievance, say you should all be given the opportunity to apply. Quote things like equal opportunities, fairness etc.

Can you ask who authorised the JD - our's has to go through a panel (public sector)

Applesandpears23 · 06/07/2018 14:23

Do you want the job? If so apply. No point complaining unless you feel selection process is unfair.

Will the interview for the position not be required to have somebody independent present to make sure there's no bias if the applicant(s) are known to the person doing the recruiting?
