Is this normal after tooth extraction?

NickyNickname123 · 04/07/2018 21:02

Had two back teeth out on Monday.
Gum is really swollen and a little sore.
I don’t remember it being this swollen when I had my other wisdom tooth out and I also don’t remember it looking like this.

I know the pics are awful, i tried for ages but this is the best I can do, but it’s all grey/yellow in the socket... is that normal or infected?

If it's sore go back. The wounds can get infected super quickly. It does look inflamed and whilst you do get some gank in the hole after an extraction if it isn't sewn, that looks like pus.

Talith · 04/07/2018 21:14

Rinse with lots of salt water if you're not already.

psicat · 04/07/2018 21:19

Wash your mouth regularly with salt water but also get back to dentist ASAP if still hurting tomorrow. Infections can be common with extractions and they can really REALLY hurt! You can also get something called dry socket which can be agony.

Rinse well tonight and tomorrow and call dentist if still hurts in the morning Wink

Errr not sure about rinsing with salt water,if you dislodge the clot of blood you can get dry socket, very pain indeed..I had to go back to the dentist 5 days later to have it packed out as I'd lost the clot, she could see bone..very painful ,hope your feeling better op,I was ill for quite a few days after

Summersnake · 04/07/2018 21:23

Have you eaten something that has got stuck in the hole?

Dmacka75 · 04/07/2018 21:24

It looks like granulation tissue, which is what forms to heal the socket. If you a lot of pain, not just soreness, or pain is increasing go back to dentist

Dmacka75 · 04/07/2018 21:26

*if you have a lot of pain

kyrenialady · 04/07/2018 21:29

Looks normal. Mine went like that.

I even put a pic on dental forum was told it was granulation tissue.

IggyAce · 04/07/2018 21:30

My DD had a tooth out a couple of months ago, hers went similar after a few days. I was worried about infection but we kept rinsing with salt water and it cleared within a couple of days. Will note she wasn't in a great deal of pain.

RobinHumphries · 04/07/2018 21:30

Looks normal.

Talith · 04/07/2018 21:32

Good point about dislodging blood clot, very sound advice but that doesn't look like a blood clot it's green and yellow?

squirrelnutkins1 · 04/07/2018 21:36

Do you have bad breath with it? I had terrible breath after an extraction and it was infected. Best to ring up 👍🏻

WhoWants2Know · 04/07/2018 21:37

Rinse gently with salt water, and ibuprofen is decent for reducing pain and inflammation. But definitely don't dislodge the clot.

Oddly enough, chewing gum seemed to get mine feeling back to normal fast.

Waterlemon · 04/07/2018 21:42

When I had an extraction I was told to definitely NOT rinse In case I dislodged the clot and caused dry socket.

I was told to use corsodyl mouthwash, and gentle tilt my head around very slowly.

Also this tooth might have been a bit more difficult to remove than the last one, so your gums might be a bit more bruised/pulled about

Lucisky · 04/07/2018 21:43

If its really painful and your mouth tastes foul/your breath stinks, it is probably dry socket. Go back to the dentist if you are concerned. I rinsed mine too aggressively with salt water and washed the clot away. It was worse than the original toothache that caused the tooth to be removed.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 04/07/2018 21:45

Back to dentist

And agree with copious salted water rinses

Magicstar1 · 04/07/2018 21:46

I got a tooth out last year and checked all this with the dentist. Grey matter is good....that's the colour of the gum healing. Don't rinse, and certainly don't use a straw, as you risk dislodging the clot.
It will be swollen and sore for a bit, it's been through some pulling and dragging.
Sounds like it's healing well though.

Information given to me two weeks ago. Definitely don't rinse, especially not in the first few days.

Mine hurt like fuck for about a week, paracetamol and ibuprofen for the first five days at least. Then it eases off, now it's fine. Remember you've been pulled about and had things effectively broken off your jaw, it's going to be sore and achy.

BadMoodBetty · 04/07/2018 22:11

Your pictures look like my gum did. But don't hesitate to go back if you're concerned.

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 04/07/2018 22:28

Definitely do not rinse with salt water.

Looks just like my wisdom tooth extraction. As PP have said it’s granulation tissue and means it’s healing.

Don’t do anything that involves sucking or spitting is what I was told. No straws or cigarettes and no rinsing unless you’re just holding it in your mouth, tilting your head and letting the mouthwash dribble out when you’re done. It’s not dignified but it worked I didn’t get dry socket thank god.

Dentist only if the pain is intense or getting progressively worse or if the extraction site looks like a hole.

Audreyhelp · 04/07/2018 22:33

I have dry socket at the moment it’s agony . Mine looks the same as yours I got antibiotics and got it packed out . Go back to the dentist I wish I had gone earlier.
