To ask you for a rough idea of fitted wardrobe cost?

We're moving into a new house in a couple of weeks and it has no wardrobes - we're going to have to manage on rails for a while.

The husband of a friend is a joiner and I would love to ask him for a quote for fitted wardrobes, but I'll be embarrassed if the quote is too high and I have to backtrack. Can you help to spare my blushes by giving me a rough idea of what a fitted double wardrobe might cost? We're in SW London, so I know it won't be bargain of the century.

A colleague paid a joiner in Surrey £5k for wall to wall cupboards.

My mum paid MFI £1,800 for the same 15 years ago.

I paid £ 1500 for double fitted wardrobe in mirrored doors about 18 months ago

I paid 6000 for four wardrobes this year so approx 1500 per wardrobe

London too

It really depends on quality, finish and, most importantly, size. Why not get someone else to come and quote to get an idea if it's on budget before asking your friends husband.

As an alternative, have you seen the Ikea PAX wardrobes? We had 3 rooms, two which were 3m across done, and including fitting it came in at under £3000. In one room we had a carpenter cut down a single wardrobe by an inch to fit the remaining gap. Not to everyone's taste but I love them. They've proven themselves to be strong and versatile.

We are looking to get fitted wardrobes and have had 3 quotes - 3 double wardrobes, floor to ceiling - sharps £7,500; local company £10,500 and another company beginning with a B ... I can't recall their name... £5,000. We had a carpenter round tonight to see how much his quite would be ... at this rate, we will be going to IKEA!!

Wardrobe with 6 doors and shelves/ hanging rails, plus painted and finished in F&B was just under 3k for us. Crazy money really. But we had quotes between 2k and 6k, went for the middle one. A lot of work did go into them to be fair.

Thanks OP. We need to do this in our place and it's crazy trying to get quotes.

If anyone has any recommendations for fitted wardrobe suppliers in London, PM me.

Goodness! Those sound horrendously expensive! We had wardrobes built in by a carpenter last year and they were nowhere near that expensive! I can't remember exactly how much they cost but I think around £3000 for a triple wardrobe with split door, top shelf and rails in one room and a double wardrobe with top shelf and rails and a triple wardrobe with top shelf and rail in the double bit and two rails in the single bit. They aren't fancy but they are what we wanted, custom built, floor to ceiling and nicely painted. And because we had them custom built we got the triple wardrobe in the one room painted the same colour as the walls, and we could choose our own handles. We bought our own handles (because we wanted to) but everything else was supplied.

just fitted wall to wall, floor to (almost) ceiling IKEA PAX. Took all bloody day and nearly ruined my marriage but they look fantastic and we have indivudual interiors that suit us. I'm painting them the same colour as the walls so they look bespoke. Really pleased with how they turned out and it cost me less than £700. They were easy, if fiddly, to put up. We had to do them standing up as there was so little ceiling clearance. We have a double each with rails, drawers, sliding shoe racks, and i have an extra single with a rail, shelves and baskets.Very impressed with the quality.

I have a cupboard off my bedroom and got quotes for £10k+ to turn it into a walk in wardrobe. So I went to IKEA, got one of their lovely chaps to design me one on their software thing and spent about £350 and then £100 for some random off the internet to fit it. Perfect! I don't have doors and it's really simple - carcasses and rails etc, a few shelves, but is perfect. If you do go to IKEA, take a day off and go when it's quiet with your measurements - height, width, depth. You can of course have a go on your own
