To be sick of being such a wuss and want to be more like DH?

I am scared of everything. It would be quicker to list the things I am not scared of.

I’m scared of -
Heights (Tried to do a zip wire on holiday to conquer fear recently and just froze. Had to be lowered down)

General anaesthetic
Flying
Lifts
Small spaces
The dark
Snakes

I do deal with all of the above ie I still fly and cope with the dark but it’s just pathetic. My DH is a proper hero and is scared of NOTHING. I am just a bag of cowardly fears.

Two things I can do that I’m not scared of and enjoy are swimming in the deep sea and public speaking BUT I’ve never been afraid to do those things and actually enjoy them so I don’t really consider that brave.

Anyone else full of phobias?

And has anyone successfully got over a phobia of heights?

There's meant to be various programmes to help you address fears gradually, so if heights effect your life the most you'd be working up to standing in a high place (cliff edge? Top of ladder?) Tbh though unless it's massively impacting your life you sound like you're fairly under control with it - you're not letting your fears dictate your life?

Crunchymum · 04/07/2018 21:15

My phobias include vomit, having my BP taken, hiccups and anything being put in eyes (contract lenses go example)

BarbaraofSevillle · 04/07/2018 21:24

Not being scared of public speaking is awesome, it's one of most people's biggest fears, so you are brave after all.

We're a bit like this. DPs always been much better than me and braver at mountain biking, road cycling, BMXing, skateboarding, all sorts.

That was until we took up scuba diving and I'm much better than him at that. He's a hopeless swimmer and a bit shit at buoyancy and air consumption.

Maybe give that a try if you like the open water?

NapQueen · 04/07/2018 21:26

Presumably your "fear of heights" is actually a fear of falling from that height?

teaandtoast · 04/07/2018 21:28

You are brave.

You're afraid of flying and fly anyway. That's braver than having no fear of flying.

TwitterQueen1 · 04/07/2018 21:33

Tbh OP, I don't think you're on your own here. In fact, I suspect you're probably in the majority so don't worry about it too much.

Heights - I'm petrified. That's never going to change.
Dark - I'm fine with it (peace, quiet, relaxing, mindfulness)
GAs - everyone thinks they'll never wake up. The thing is, if you don't you won't know about it! And actually, they're painless. It's the recovery that isn't! Grin
Lifts - not keen, but I'm more scared of escalators.
Flying - this is now total 'me time'. I love it because I can't do anything except sit, eat, drink, watch, sleep. No-one has any expectations of me.
Small spaces - no. not keen. I avoid them.

It's not a question of being braver or more scared than anyone else. We're all weird in our ways.

ComeTheFuck0nBridget · 04/07/2018 21:42

I'm scared of everything. Spiders, heights, falling, dying, men, water, to name a few vague things. I'm very jumpy in general too.

I do know it's mostly irrational and I work really hard not to let my fears rule my life. I couldn't just decide spur of the moment to do something "scary", I need a lot of time to warm up to do things, like getting on a boat for example. I'd need it to be planned and I'd feel like I needed to address all the risks and how they could be managed, if that makes sense.

DH isn't scared of anything at all and I really admire that about him. He is very calm and like a rock for me and it really helps me to calm down and be able to do things.

UpstartCrow · 04/07/2018 21:46

I'm scared of spiders, the dentist, having anything touch my belly button, and public speaking.
You are brave - being brave is facing your fear and dealing with it, not being nerveless!

Nothisispatrick · 04/07/2018 21:47

The fact you can swim in deep sea and speak publically means you're very brave to me.

Swimming in the deep sea is one of my biggest fears.

bigoldscaredycat · 04/07/2018 21:49

Ah this has made me feel a bit better! Thanks everyone.

I would definitely like to get over my fear of heights or maybe to be more specific fear of open air heights. I’d have loved to have done the zip slide and saw the joy and exhilaration everyone else I was with got from doing it. I was just utterly paralysed though, there’s no way I could have stepped off that platform!

Oh I also dislike small boats. Went on a harbour boat trip last year and the boat was so fast it was jumping out the water. Everyone else loved it. I was white knuckling the safety rail and praying for it to end.

Lifts, small spaces and the dark are all part of claustrophobia so you can count those as 1 fear if that makes you feel better. I too am claustrophobic.
