I work in a small office with 3 other girls. I've been there for less than a year while the others have been there for years. Whilst I love my job on of the girls is driving me insane!! She's close to retirement age but insists on listening to an awful radio station every single day. It's all teeny bopper chart rubbish. It's HER radio so nobody can change it. The other girls don't like the music either but everyone is scared to tell her (she's a bit obnoxious and rude). But not just this... she sings along loudly to every song, really badly may I add. She makes my teeth grind! When she's not singing along to shit music she's talking out loud to herself! Going through everything that's she's working on. There's just never any peace. It's lovely when she's off so we can turn the radio off. AIBU to want to scream at her to shut the hell up!!!

BTW - I'm in the north east - we're "girls" or "lasses" well into our nineties here, and the blokes are "lads" (though NOT "boys").

Stop dissing our culture! Grin

NewYearNewMe18 Well said. I got told off recently for greeting a roomful of women with, 'Good evening, ladies,' and another rollicking for saying, 'Hello, girls!' to a group of my peers at a coffee do.

ClinkyMonkey · 04/07/2018 19:26

On the subject of 'girls', my mum is 85 and her friends of similar age are girls. Why on earth does this annoy people so much? Who bloody cares?

Sorry your thread is getting hijacked OP!

I had this exact situation in the office I used to work in a few years back. 3 of us in the office and the ‘Senior’ who had been there longer than anyone could remember insisted on having Radio 3 blasting out all day. She said it was the only way she could concentrate on her work. It was basically bollocks to everyone else. She was as bolshy as they come and to be honest we were all a bit scared of her as well. Every time we suggested turning it off or even just down a bit she had a right kick off. She had the boss on her side as well, or so we thought. Anyway eventually we had a new girl start as an office junior, let’s call her Jane. She was lovely and me and my other colleague really hit it off with her from the start. Anyway Jane asked us one day while Senior was out of the office why she had to have the radio so loud as it was really hard for her to work over it. We explained how we had tried to get her to tone it down but she was having none of it. Jane couldn’t believe we’d let it get this bad. She assumed at first that we all liked it as well! So she walks right over and switched it off 😊 a few minutes later Senior came back in the room, saw her radio was off and literally started to go red with rage. Shouted ‘who’s messed with my radio’ and went to turn it back on. Quick as a flash Jane walks over to her and explains how none of us want it on, and that basically it’s 3 against 1! Senior tunes it on again anyway. So Jane leans over her and unplugs it. Then gets right in close to her again and said quietly ’ if that fucking things goes on again I promise you I’ll throw it out of the fucking window’ and walked back to her desk and resumed her work. We were just stunned and didn’t quite know what would happen next. Senior just stood there in amazement for a few minutes, went even redder than before then walked out. We all get back to our work expecting a visit from the boss at any moment. A few minutes later Senior comes quietly in, sits down and gets on with her work without so much as a peep! That evening she took the radio home with her! So I don’t know what was said in the manager’s office. I can only assume that she also had been scared to say anything all these years. And in the end all it took was someone a bit braver than us to stand up to her! Senior finally retired a few months later, and she seemed to manage to work perfectly fine without Radio 3 for the rest of her time! I remember saying to my other colleague afterward why the hell we didn’t just pluck up the courage ourselves before if it was that simple! 😆

mumsastudent · 04/07/2018 19:29

sing opera preferably offkey! or sing along with her but make mistakes! all of you together!

MissyMoooo · 04/07/2018 19:37

@starzig thank you 🌷 I think a great alternative is to have a day each but nobody will broach the subject with her. Like I say it's HER radio! I'm thinking about taking in my own radio so we can have days each but that will go down like a lead balloon. I just can't wait til she retires!!

To legally play music outside of your home, the venue needs a licence as does the person playing the music. Last time I paid for one cost me about £150 a year. So your manager has to pay as does your colleague.

Get yer big girls' pants on (yes I know I said girls and I meant it) and tell the manager he has to pay or get the radio turned off. tell your colleague her radio is giving a public performance and therefore she has to pay as well. Oh and it's not just about the paying - you have to list every track you play, every day......(well you did when I had a PRS licence)

Verbena87 · 04/07/2018 19:39

My sister is dyslexic and got noise cancelling headphones for work as they genuinely help her concentrate. I tried them on and they are sheer bliss: portable peace! They’re big cans, not in-ear ones, so you’d need to explain yourself, but I’d just get those!

LonginesPrime · 04/07/2018 19:43

Why is there always one who insists on telling everyone that girls and ladies is so incorrect ? It's beyond irritating when a dick wants to keep on correcting regional or colloquial speech

I think you'll find that penis is the correct term, actually.

MissyMoooo · 04/07/2018 19:44

@Delia65 you make it sound like my office lol. It's so irritating. I have to walk out every now and then, it's the type of station that plays the same songs over and over (think Lady Gaga, Justin Beiber, awful music that even my 11yo DD wouldn't listen to) I used to love Ed Sheeran too but after hearing him 15 times a day for the past 8 months I can't stand his music now Confused. I wish we had a boss that was big enough to do this. Give it a few more months and I'll probably crack and tell her myself!!

Here you go. Have a read and mention it to your manager. He must might be more bothered about stopping her if he thinks he might land himself or the company with a fine.

MissyMoooo · 04/07/2018 21:35

@SaltyPeanut thank you this is great!! I would rather have no music anyway Smile

For me, the question is: how close to retirement is she?
If it is soon, put up with it, it's too late for her to change and no-one would want her to leave her job with an unhappy feeling.

If she is going to be around for a couple or more years, perhaps you and the other girls could have a tactful word. It won't be easy though if you've let it go on for so long. She probably thinks you all like it!.

distantstars · 04/07/2018 21:49

Don't you need a license to play music in certain spaces? 🤔 like a gym needs a license to use songs for the gym space and classes..... maybe point that out?

distantstars · 04/07/2018 21:52

I should RTWF! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Jamiefraserskilt · 04/07/2018 21:58

Her name isn't Carol by any chance? Used to have one of these in my office. Senior who used to constantly talk to herself when you were trying to concentrate. If anyone ever came to speak to me or if I took a call from a client, she used to tut and complain about the noise. Obnoxious twat.

blackteasplease · 04/07/2018 22:11

I do now want to say "I'm going out with the women". Has a ring to it!

MissyMoooo · 04/07/2018 22:14

No not Carol hahaha!! And still 5 years til she retires Confused. I've been trying to talk her into early retirement but to no avail Sad Honestly can't stand it for the next 5 years!! She doesn't have a licence to play music but I don't think I can play that card as if I do all of the other offices will be stopped from playing theirs UUIURGH

My mum hangs out with the girls too. Im happy to be called a girl and sometimes I hang out with boys

FrangipaniBlue · 04/07/2018 22:31

I hang out with the lasses. DH and DS hang out with the lads.

AKA "my mates".

and this might break MN but if I'm addressing a group of mixed gender people I say "you guys" Hmm

Sorry for the derailment OP (your colleague is a twat, put your big lass pants on and unplug her radio) Grin
