Painted kitchen chipping - wibu

to contact our decorator 6 months on to complain all the cupboards are chipping.

It cost nearly £1000 to have all our cupboards painted a slightly darker colour and straight away I noticed small chips, but thought I could live with it.

6 months on, almost all of them are chipping back to white. WIBU to contact him this far on?

What was the surface that was painted? £1000 is very cheap.

Interestingly, I have just spent the last week painting my kitchen. Proper prep is required - sanding, priming and painting (top coat of paint required it).

However, if it’s a wood kitchen, it’s still wood. Knocks and scratches will still happen.

If, however, it’s chipping without anyone knocking it/scratching it, call the person back.

I agree, however, with the person above that the price seems very cheap. Perhaps they skipped some steps, didn’t Wait requisite time between coats, or used inferior paint.

Unfortunately painted furniture does chip, even if you prep it properly etc. Painted items take a lot of upkeep to keep them looking pristine, unless they are never used..Which isn't the case with a kitchen. Do contact him, but have reasonable expectations.

I paid for the paint. It was basically one island and a row of cupboards, I thought it was quite expensive.
The chips are all from knocks, I'm careful, but DH and the kids obviously aren't enough.

Did he topcoat it with any kind of clear varnish? that might help improve durability for you. Polyvine do some very good varnishes in a good range of finishes so that you don't need to alter the finish of your paint (ie the sheen level). They are very easy to apply, quick drying and very low odour. I use them on my painted furniture and it does help a great deal (the pieces I haven't top coated definitely chip a lot more.)
