Neighbours have 4 cars on shared drive designed for 1 each

For 7 months our neighbour has parked 4 cars on the shared drive. It means DH & I struggle to park our 2 cars every time we use the drive as the entrance is now very tight due to their cars sticking out. I have spoken to our neighbour and politely mentioned how annoying it was for us. This was a month ago and nothing changed. One of the cars was a present for son who doesn't live there and he doesn't want the car. They said if they sold it, they would lose money and can't park on road as not taxed. Two are personal cars (1 for Mum, 1 for Dad) and the final car is a work van.

What would you do next? Our neighbours are lovely people but the car parking is driving me mad!
I haven't attached a picture as you'll see the name of their business

True, but you couldn't get it towed every time it happened as a PP suggested.

Besides, there needs to be a long term solution here, not tit fir tat reporting of bad parking.

GladAllOver · 03/07/2018 22:15

Referring back to the OP's original drawing, if that is accurate there is plenty of room for her two cars, and three of the neighbour's cars, on the paved area without any obstruction to each other's parking or to the garages.
It is only the neighbour's fourth car that causes the obstruction.

It would be unreasonable for the OP to pave over her front garden to widen the access, and it would be illegal for her to drive over the pavement in front of that unless there is a dropped kerb at that point, which is why I keep asking about the dropped kerb.

To widen the dropped kerb would be expensive, and the council may not approve it if they decide there is already adequate access to the site.

Your neighbours need to get rid of Ds car and problem solved.
Also feel sorry for neighbour 1 whose parking space in front of their garage is restricted and have to park in the road.

KittyMcKitty · 04/07/2018 10:03

Out of interest how did you and the neighbour with 4 cars decide it was ok for you all to stop neighbour 1 using their drive and garage?

As far as I can see you are guilty of doing to neighbour 1 far worse then neighbour 2 is doing to you! Do you pay neighbour 1 for use and maintenance of their drive?

RumerGodden · 04/07/2018 10:09

Fence around your garden, and then get them to move EVERY TIME you can't get in and out.

GladAllOver · 04/07/2018 10:09

Why can't neighbour 1 use their garage or park in front of it?
If the sketch is accurate there is no problem.

Cailleach1 · 04/07/2018 10:17

Car overhanging pavement is not on. People with wheelchairs, buggies and pedestrians have to avoid jutting car. Can you report anonymously to the Council?

diddl · 04/07/2018 10:34

On the deeds-what do the 6 squares in the middle(ish) denote?

diddl · 04/07/2018 10:35

"Why can't neighbour 1 use their garage "

Because Op & other neighbour have made it inaccessible?

Who don't you use your garage Op?

Xenia · 04/07/2018 10:44

The neighbour who never gets to park on the drive and whose garage access is blocked is probably cross about all 6 cars parked across their access drive!

Could you park opposite the car 4 so they cannot get their cars 1 - 3 in in order to force the issue and only stop parking adjacent to their car 4 once they get rid of one of their 3 cars?

mydogishot · 04/07/2018 10:54

There is an easyish way to fix this (although a bit bitchy).
Assuming you're UK.

My local council (London borough) gives tickets to anyone even slightly hanging over the pavement.

I'm sure just one would make them think.

GladAllOver · 04/07/2018 11:58

"Why can't neighbour 1 use their garage "

Because Op & other neighbour have made it inaccessible?

There is NOTING to stop neighbour 1 using their garage, or parking in front of it - providing car 4 isn't blocking the entrance from the road.

diddl · 04/07/2018 13:02

"There is NOTING to stop neighbour 1 using their garage, or parking in front of it "

"I was thinking they could park one of the cars in front of neighbour 1 garage but thought the suggestion was taking the mick a bit as we both are the reason why they can't park on their drive."
