Bringing a dish for a picnic

If you had to go to a picnic with a group of girls and their kids, what dish would you bring? Just need some ideas, tanks Smile

Mini sausages, crisps and a punnet of strawberries.

NotTakenUsername · 03/07/2018 14:02

That’s picnic food, but not a dish as such. Did they specifically say ‘dish’?

ComtesseDeSpair · 03/07/2018 14:03

I generally take a big fruit salad and couple of homemade savoury salads - I don't mean some mixed leaves chucked in a bowl, but something with mixed veggies, nuts, seeds, cheese etc and dressed. Mainly because other people usually don't take either and I really like fruit and salad at a picnic.

NotTakenUsername · 03/07/2018 14:04

I’d take a big bowl of eton mess (then I’d hide behind a tree and eat it all...)

wink1970 · 03/07/2018 14:07

my favourite outdoor dishes at the moments are:

greek salad - cubed feta (or another cheese), olives, chopped cucumber, baby tomatoes, sliced red onion.

mini pitta breads & hummous

home made mini flatbreads or quiches

chicken skewers - alternate small cubes of cooked chicken, slices of lemon & raw bell peppers.

I love a picnic! Don't forget the fizz/pimms/aperol/whatever

calzone · 03/07/2018 14:09

Tomato and mozzarella and avocado salad

Feta and watermelon salad

Pimms

Crisps

SaturdaySauv · 03/07/2018 14:09

Tuna, sweetcorn and mayo with a packet of crisp breads
Tomato, basil and mozzarella salad
French stick and pate
Pearl couscous with feta and roasted peppers (lemon and parsley too)
Big fruit salad

NoSquirrels · 03/07/2018 14:12

Big herb & potato frittata.
Pasta pesto salad with veggies.
Smoked salmon, cream cheese
Baguette

Orangedaisy · 03/07/2018 14:13

I’m clearly tight/boring on picnics! Need more info though-how old are kids, are you bothering with plates/cutlery etc, how far does it have to be carried, how long after leaving home do you want to eat it etc? My picnics are often after a walk and kids are all 4 and under, invariably (however much they like their smoked salmon and avocado etc etc) it’s the crisps, sausages and strawberries that they always wolf down first (and that shuts them up so the ‘girls’ can catch up without interruption.

;-) @ Orangedaisy

I think we all presumed crisps & strawbs were a winner -as that's all my grandaughter would eat from that lot-

henpeckedinchief · 03/07/2018 14:20

Buy an unsliced loaf. Chop the top inch off of the whole thing. Cut a rectangle out of the middle.

Cut the bread from the middle into cubes, toss with a bit of oil and salt, grill in the oven for a few mins until crispy.

Layer the hollow loaf with sliced tomatoes, pesto, basil, mozzarella and the croutons. Or cheese, cream cheese, tomatoes and croutons. Or whatever combo you like!

Put the 'lid' of the bread back on. Wrap tightly in cling film. Bring a bread knife to slice it up when you get there. It's the BEST! and it can be made the day before!

It depends which group of friends but if you're asking I'm sensing its a bit above the yummy mini sausages and crisps level which I usually grab.

Assuming you had a decent cooler and didnt have too much of a journey...

Tomato & basil & mozzarella salad
Potato salad with crispy smoked bacon & chives
Posh crusty bread and pre-prepared plate of antipasto meats and peppers (this is very easy and can look impressive with good arrangement!)
Homemade roast veggie quiche

Wellthisunexpected · 03/07/2018 14:30

Quiche probably. Has the organiser given any indication of what is being brought already? I wouldn't want 10 green salads!

KurriKurri · 03/07/2018 14:40

I went to a bring a dish recently and i took hummus and chopped veggies to eat it with - it disappeared very quickly.
Other people took, pasta salad, little cheese muffins (yum) someone made a big sort of filo pastry coiled thing filled with cream cheese (also yum)quiche, cold homemade pizza, there were big bowls of various salad, sliced french stick and cheeses, strawberries, chocolate cake, grapes and a lemon cake.

It was all lovely - so hope there are some ideas there - the cheesy muffins would be nice for kids.

BetsyBellringer · 03/07/2018 14:42

Home made sausage rolls.

Picnicpotluck · 03/07/2018 14:48

Thank you, so lovely ideas. Yes she said bring a dish.

MrsMotherHen · 03/07/2018 14:51

quiche and sasuage rolls I would bring maybe a melon.

LaurieMarlow · 03/07/2018 15:06

Frittata, quiche, fancy potato salad (with bacon or smoked salmon), giant sausage roll, couscous, pork pie if you're feeling adventurous.

elQuintoConyo · 03/07/2018 15:10

Tortilla, potato and onion tortilla.
Falafel balls.
Homous with chopped up peppers and carrots to dip. Doritos, too, for the veg-refusers my ds
Simple rocket salad of walnuts and apples.

Strawberries dipped in chocolate for pudding!

Ceecee18 · 03/07/2018 15:50

These middle eastern style potatoes. I usually do them for a BBQ but they're so nice and would be fine for a picnic.

Along with some chicken and veg skewers and a desert, probably some little cakes.

5foot5 · 03/07/2018 15:56

Cheese scones.
Potato Salad
Baklava

5foot5 · 03/07/2018 15:57

Strawberries dipped in chocolate for pudding!

We had a bring and share picnic with family last summer and DD made these. Looked lovely when we set off but unfortunately by the time we came to eat them the chocolate had melted and they had started to look a bit unappealing. Still tasted nice, but messy!

Confusedbeetle · 03/07/2018 15:59

A posh potato salad

GooodMythicalMorning · 03/07/2018 16:00

Potato salad if in a cool box. Mini sausage rolls.

NotTakenUsername · 03/07/2018 18:10

Googling cheese scones... haven’t had them in years and NEED them now!
