To ask what I can do about my female hair loss?

I’m so upset, and can’t bring myself to talk about it to anyone in real life. I’m in my late 20s and my hairs been gradually thinning since my early 20s.

It’s gone up a notch, as my DH pointed it out to me. I’m crushed Sad his thoughtless words have really hurt.

It affects every part of my life and has destroyed my confidence. I don’t socialise and have stopped doing the hobbies I love because of it.

My mother’s hair is the same, so I assume it’s genetic.

Iron levels are always good, so can’t be that.

Can anyone offer any advice or tips on how I can make my hair look better and improve my confidence?

I’m feeling desperate here.

Oh you poor thing.

There is a hair loss support thread that someone will hopefully link to.

Notwithstanding you think it's genetic, I would still see GP to check there isn't a cause (eg thyroid)

WigglyBlossom · 03/07/2018 10:28

Make an appointment to speak to your GP.

I can completely understand as mine has been getting thinner and thinner since my early 20s too. I find knowing your scalp is on show is really difficult. In the last few years I’ve been religiously taking ‘hair’ specific vitamin supplements. But I think it be related to low thyroid levels. Testing heamoglobin diesn’t tend to show up low ferritin levels (mi e have been really low fir decades).
Have a read of this thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3245722-To-think-the-NHS-are-deliberately-keeping-people-mostly-women-sick
After reading it I joined a thyroid support group and am now waiting for a private blood test.

I am experiencing the same thing - I have had to clear the drains twice this week. It’s humiliating, isn’t it? I know mine is caused by medication, but I’m on it for life, damn it. Ask your GP for referral to a thrichologist.

AtrocityNeedles · 03/07/2018 10:40

Are you near London? I went to Philip Kingsley and it was expensive and took a while, but my hair definitely improved with their treatment.

pissedonatrain · 03/07/2018 10:43

Definitely get a full work up from your GP first.

My hair started thinning and I used Rogaine which stopped the loss and now it seems to be growing back a bit.

tenbob · 03/07/2018 10:57

Agree you need to get your ferritin levels checked - haemoglobin alone isn't enough
Plus thyroid screen

It's also worth taking a vit D supplement on top of a general hair and nails multi vit

Thanks for replies. I know I should see my GP, it’s just I find it really hard to talk about. I’m not sure if it’s be futile as everything I’ve read suggests female pattern hair loss is incurable Sad

Sadly not near London as us north, but if there good I would travel to the other side of the world if it could make my hair normal.

Thyroid could be a cause. I’ve had other possible thyroid related symptoms now I’ve googled it.

Weak muscles, weight gain, tired lots. I just put it down to parenting.

I have exactly the same problem. I know I need to go and see the gp but... Op have you looked in to hair toppers? If not it's maybe worth having a look at some YouTube videos and seeing if that's possibly an option for you. I just need to be braver and actually go to the gp.

Frosty66612 · 03/07/2018 11:13

Full lace wigs can be good as they look very natural as if the hair is growing out of your own head. Check out the A list lace wig Instagram page to see all the pics and videos.
My hair is very thin and always has been. I’ve had every blood test imaginable and everything is always normal. My parents both have fine hair so I think it’s genetic for me. I can’t ever wear my hair up as I have a few little bald patches at the sides. Biotin supplements helped a little bit

eyycarumba · 03/07/2018 11:20

I have incredibly thin and fine hair on my head, late 20s. On the contrary, the rest of my body hair is thick and black. I can remember photoshopping my parting to look darker and people making comments about my 'receding hairline' in my teens so it's always been the same. I would get handfuls of hair every wash, I have to wear it up otherwise it falls everywhere and I can't style it as it's completely limp, breaks, grips/clips don't stay and any product makes it greasy. It is crushing, I've spent nights crying over it researching transplants or scalp tattooing, products etc.... I don't dye my hair, I touch it as little as possible and the only heat I apply to it is the hairdryer (leaving it wet actually makes it break more). I dread going to the hairdressers, it's humiliating, I just have 'unfortunate hair' and there's not much they can do with it style wise.

I've been to the doctors and was fobbed off - literally took a look and said that's just my hair and if its gone it's not coming back), over time I've had blood tests, hormone tests, thyroid tests..all clear. My dad was bald, I'm not aware of any women in my family having the same problem. I have been using a caffeine shampoo (cheap, off brand) that has made the hair loss a bit better when washing, I've also switched my general shampoo/conditioners which seem to have helped (I use Lush stuff, including their hot oil treatment for fine hair and a product called 'roots' which has improved the texture). I've also come off all hormonal contraception (had Mirena which made it so bad I developed bald spots) and really kicked my diet up the arse to be healthier. It's still fine, but it has noticeably improved over the past year since I started this (even hairdresser noted). I considered Rogaine but at my age I didn't want to be on it for a lifetime or potentially all the hair fall out if I stopped.

Definitely get any tests you can from your GP and if you can, get a referral to a derm or trichologist, private if you can afford it. Switch to better brand shampoos/conditioners and eat as much Omega 3/leafy greens as possible

user1490361586 · 03/07/2018 14:11

I’ve switched to a nice Lush shampoo, as I wanted to cut down chemicals.

Flying Elbows-I know what you mean about being brave and going to the gp.

eyycarumba-being fobbed off like you were must have been awful. Sad

Sad to see others going through similar. Flowers

go to your GP, this is not something to put up with as it will be help-able in most cases.

I bought DH a caffeine shampoo to help him grow back his post-radio balding bit and he said it was brilliant. Ended up stopping using it as he got fed up of cutting his hair so often! worth a try?

Burke1585 · 03/07/2018 14:31

Hi I have really fine hair also. A few months back I started losing quite a lot of hair, I tried loads of different lotions and tablets but nothing seemed to work. I am now using Maxi-hair from lamberts, you take one tablet a day. I have noticed a big difference in my hair since I started using them! HTH.
