AIBU about neighbours dog

kaytee87 · 01/07/2018 22:07

Most nights one of my neighbours lets their dog outside where it barks for hours, sometimes until 11pm which I appreciate isn't that late but seems antisocial. Also if the dogs barking for that long then surely it wants company or something else.

Feeling particularly annoyed tonight as I'm hot and suffering badly with hayfever Sad

So aibu to be silently cursing them while I lie in bed unable to sleep?

If they aren't calling it in pretty immediately (enough time to get off the loo and run downstairs!) then YANBU. Poor dog, especially in this heat.

Yanbu.

11pm may not be "that late" but who wants to listen to a dog barking into the night?!

kaytee87 · 01/07/2018 22:11

I wonder if they're able to tune out the noise somehow?

Yanbu.

It's completely anti-social behaviour to do this. Dogs are not lawn ornaments and do not enjoy being locked outside alone for hours on end.

They are probably the same type who don't bother walking it.

Go round and bang on their door and complain. Every. Single. Time.

Notsure1111 · 01/07/2018 22:15

You must be one of my neighbours! A few doors up from me is the same thing a barking dog all night it feels like! I've been wondering myself what to do. We live in a nice area so I can't shout out the window "shut your bloody dog up" like I want to.

argumentativefeminist · 01/07/2018 22:24

If any of you are rural ish, just make sure it isn't actually a muntjack you're hearing because they bark almost exactly like dogs! But it probably is a dog, and you'd not be unreasonable to go and talk to your neighbours about it - a much better starting point than an anonymous complaint as it won't put their hackles up as much and you can see whether they are genuinely trying to train their dog.

kaytee87 · 01/07/2018 22:29

@Notsure1111 Oo maybe, we're in a nice area too. Will you have a word with them? I'm not brave enough Grin

What breed of dog is it? If they are just letting them out in the garden instead of walking a dog who needs the stimulation and energy burn of a proper walk then the dog could really be suffering from a lack of mental stimulation.

We have dogs and are extremely aware and take steps to stop them if they are barking outside at any hour, not just unsociable ones!!

My own pups annoy me and likely my neighbours on the rare occasion but as they are properly walked it’s never usually at unsociably late times as they are in by then.

I cannot think how people could tune them out, it annoys us (me) when it does happen (normally early, as sometimes after a very early, like 5:30am morning walk DH leaves the back door open for them when he leaves for work at 6:30 and they bark at birds or squirrels or whatever) so it must be doubly annoying for our neighbours at 6:45 or so! I get down there and shut them inside asap if this is happening.

Your neighbours are either not walking their dogs or they are wearing earphones or have the TV up or just maybe don’t care. It shoud be something they take care of, out of common decency. It speaks of a larger issue though!!

kaytee87 · 01/07/2018 22:30

Off to google muntjack

I'm not sure on the breed, large black haired. There are woods behind us that they could take it for long walks in the shade too as I know it's too hot for walks in the sun at the moment.

It must be inside now Smile all is quiet

OP posts:

Muntjack like woods! They're more likely to just go "bark.... bark... bark..." if you get me whereas a dog will normally be like "bark bark bark boof... boof... yap yap yap" if they're chasing something/playing and more insistent and maybe more whining than the occasional bark if they're wanting to be let in. Or mine are anyway!

kaytee87 · 01/07/2018 23:05

I defo think it's the neighbours dog, that's the direction the noise is coming from.
I actually don't think we have muntjac in Scotland though I may be wrong.

Oh god, this is my pet peeve (excuse the pun). We live in a cul-de-sac and one of his neighbours let’s his dog out every night at 11pm and the bloomin’ animal runs to the end of the road and barks his head off. If you mention it to the neighbour he claims the dog gets let off his lead when they turn down our road after walking it, and that he doesn’t always catch up in time. Excepf both of us have walked past when the dog’s been barking and the owner has been inside his house, door wide open. Confused.
Wakes up our baby almost every single time as well. Angry

argumentativefeminist · 01/07/2018 23:07

I dont think you have many, they're often hunted to protect the red deer, which I guess is just the way the cookie crumbles! I would complain but I'd have a personal word with them if you feel capable rather than arsing them off with an anonymous letter or council complaint when they might be totally reasonable if you just point it out.

Chattymummyhere · 01/07/2018 23:09

That’s so annoying. My dogs I know are a pain. Moan to go out then once out longer than a we woof woof. However I get them straight back in. My neighbours dog is out for hours whining which in turn makes my dogs bark in the house Angry

kaytee87 · 01/07/2018 23:10

I won't do anonymous letter or council complaint. I've never actually spoken to these neighbours, they're not directly next to me so no idea how they'd react to me speaking to them about it.
Will have to have a think about it.

We had a dog barking for two days day and night no one could locate which house it was coming from its gone silent now I'm finding that ominous

argumentativefeminist · 01/07/2018 23:15

Good luck OP! I hope they're reasonable and you can sort it out for everyone's sake.

Gibble1 · 01/07/2018 23:24

We had a dog barking on Wednesday morning from somewhere nearby and a neighbour over the back shouted out that they would call environmental health. DD then shouts out the window that he’s got a nerve complaining about a dog when all we can ever smell is his weed 😱😳.
Dog and neighbour then both went quiet.

kaytee87 · 01/07/2018 23:27

@Gibble1 😂 your daughter sounds brilliant
